Number: 38 Title: Evangelist Utena Type: Fan fiction crossover Adventure ---------- Synopsis: ---------- Utena characters cast into the Evangelion story with numerous references to the Utena series. ---------- Scenes: ---------- The hum of cicadas was virtually the only sound that could be heard as the afternoon train pulled away. A long girl stood at the platform, holding a duffle bag over one shoulder while she read the postcard held in her open hand. Teaching Kendo at the club. The key is under the Welcome mat, so come inside and make yourself at home. - Saiyonji Utena Tenjou scowled at the short message as she re-read it for the millionth time. Being dismissed like that... Ugh! Utena had always believed that the indifferent attitude city life bread into people would be the downfall of society. Here, she held proof. Her old friend (and for a while, Kendo instructor), was brushing her off to play hooky out on the town. Was it because she was too young? Was it because he had a date? Utena's teeth began to grind together, and the postcard would probably be better off in the afterlife, but after a while, she managed to calm herself enough to leave the train station. *First, he puts off my visit for three weeks, then he doesn't show up to meet me, and finally, he leaves this stupid message about 'waiting up' for him? Saiyonji, I am so gonna kick your ass when you get home.* ------------------------------------------------------------------------- EVANGELIST UTENA ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Utena stepped out of the train station with a strange feeling crawling down her back. Used to a life far away from the busy streets of Tokyo-3, she was not accustomed to the ambience of the city. What worried her was its absence. The cities she knew were busy places driven to pure insanity. Traffic crawled along at a pace often likened to geographical epochs, getting from one place to another was a paramount challenge so great that the inexperienced had to buy guidance. It always struck Utena is being bizarrely similar to purchasing tickets for an amusement park ride. Still, she was here, but no one else was. Streets empty like dry beer cans polished off by an accomplished drinker and tossed aside; the sidewalks open pathways to nowhere. Every traffic light flashed an emergency pattern. As she walked into the commercial area of the city, two meter tall neon billboards proclaimed that an evacuation was under way, their message clear to a blind man wearing sunglasses. Pushing the question of why a blind man would indeed be wearing sunglasses out of her mind, Utena searched city block after empty city block. The address on his postcard, hastily scribbled down by a hand different than the one who wrote the greetings, was rapidly becoming a legend in Utena's mind. *It's the fucking city of El Dorado! I'll never find this place! And to make matters worse, the entire city has been evacuated. What is going on here that requires the city to be emptied out like this?* ------------------------------------------------------------------------- A fanfic by Rick Spiff ------------------------------------------------------------------------- There! Her eyes found movement, right at the edge of her vision. She turned to look at it, and saw a thin girl in a red dress standing at the top of the next hill. The girl looked vaguely familiar, and wore a pair of wire-rimmed glasses along with white gloves that fit the rest of her formal clothing. It was about the fourth strangest thing Utena had ever seen, and she spent a moment simply watching the girl. Her trance was interrupted by a massive explosion that went off very nearby. Dust and chips of concrete flew by as she covered her face with her arm. The sound of a skyscraper belly-flopping onto the road roared in her ears while the dust cleared. *Foot? Foot... BIG FOOT!* There was something stalking down the streets of Tokyo-3, and it wasn't Godzilla. Utena glanced back at the hill--now her only route of escape, as the intersection she had just left was a pile of twisted steel beams and shattered concrete dozens of meters tall--and saw that the mysterious girl in the red dress was gone. Utena sprinted up the road, putting whatever was attacking Tokyo-3 behind her and running for safety. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- An Insanity Productions Production ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Utena reached the top of the hill and slowed to a jog while she risked a look over her shoulder. The... thing that was attacking the city was big. Easily over forty meters tall, it was idly swatting at the JSSDF missile carriers that flew around it. From the scale of things, the large Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft looked like toys. However, toys did not explode into fireballs once batted them out of the air. She thought it, whatever it was, looked like a B-movie alien. Tall and emaciated (very, very tall), with overly-large black shoulders, huge hands with long black fingers, and an olive-green body. Ugly. And was that thing in its chest the head? It looked like a stone mask! *What on earth is going on here?* Utena wanted to know. She skipped off the curb and ran into the street. Since nobody was driving around like a maniac, she figured it would be quickest to cut across the road and double-back on the monster. It was head for the center of the city; she would head for the outskirts. No sense in getting killed in the middle of the JSSDF's battle against that... that... thing. Of course, at that moment a small blue sports car came around the corner in a four-wheel skid, coming to a stop mere inches before it would have smeared Utena into a fine paste. Saiyonji leaned out of the driver's side window. Utena bent down to look him in the eye. "Saiyonji?" "Utena!" "You're late." "I couldn't find you." "What's going on around here?" "Get in the car. I'll explain." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Utena was inside in barely two seconds. Saiyjonji pulled away, laying rubber down and aiming the car (roughly) down a street that took them away from the beast, but at an angle perpendicular to it's path. "Is this your car?" Utena asked, hanging on for dear life while Saiyonji sped through the city streets at excessively dangerous speeds. The last she could remember, Saiyonji had resisted getting a car. 'Damn useless things' he'd called them. Said you couldn't get where you really needed to go fast in a car. Better to get a bicycle to cut through the Tokyo-3 pedestrian traffic. Well, he was making up for lost time now.
