Synopsis:

Megan Kalista is your average Archeology major with a minor in Earth
Sciences. On a (hopefully) relaxing and informative vacation to central
China, she happens across an ancient temple of sorts. The temple is a
point of communication and transportation that hasn't been used in over
four thousand years. It has been in use recently, however.

A tall soldier comes out of the temple, spies her, and begins asking her
questions in strange language. Realizing he isn't getting through, he
holds up his hand--which has a green gem set into the palm, and suddenly
he's able to speak flawless English. The soldier tells her that a
dangerous criminal has passed through a portal within the temple, a
portal open only every few thousand years. He needs to warn the Shaolin
monks that the portal is open and that someone from his world has come
through.

The soldier--Kaorin of the Cross clan--is from a worls where magick
rules. It is separated from the earth by a powerful barrier that an
ambitious king discovered some twelve thousand years ago. He took back
many dark mages and took over the world. Great battles ensued, and the
king was eventually defeated. The portal closed by itself, and time
passes. The most recent time the portal was open, China was a wilderness
where travelers from this world only met the monks who lived their ways,
alone in the deep mountains. As the monks were one of very few lines of
defense against the primitive chaos that ruled the world in this time,
they quickly struck an aliance with this world of magick. They never
figured out when the portal would open again, but promised that they
would keep a contingent of fighters trained to battle mages, just in
case something untowed did happen.

Such as what has just happened.

Kaorin realizes that Megan, though intelligent, is untrained in the
Shaolin ways. As fate (me) would have it, time is of the essence, and he
can't figure out how to get back through the portal. He reaches into his
emergency kit, and asks if she'll help him, or point him in the
direction of help. Remembering a fortune she had received earlier, she
decides to help. Kaorin "gifts" her with focus gems of her own--an
excessive amount, since he's not formally trained as a scanner--and the
two are off on a mad chase to corner this criminal before he takes over
the world or something.

After numerous adventures in China, the pair goes back through the
portal with their captured target. Much is discussed about Megan's
half-earthling, half-mage status.

...

And... more stuff happens. More stuff that belongs in story, in fact.

One idea: Megan stays in this world for a long while, stabilizing the
portal, but then having to guard it when vicious soul-sucking aliens
attack and try to get through to earth.

Another idea: Ancient demons, normally peaceful, take offense to Megan's
use of the focus gems that _they_ created and declare war on the mage
world and earth. Megan has to plead the case for a stronger alliance
between earth and the mage world.

Another idea: The criminal has mastered the forbidden art of
shape-shifting (forbidden because it leads to severe psychotic episodes)
and transforms into a giant dragon, thrashing through the mage world.
While Kaorin, Megan, and a dozen other soldiers battle him, his cohorts
slip through the portal to earth and hold it hostage awaiting the
release of their comrade.

Yet Another idea: Megan elects to go back to earth long enough to find a
technological way to stabilize the portal. Once it is stabilized, she
volunteers for a position of liason for earth. She spends her time in
the mage world, teaching the natives (including the government) about
earth, and learning about the mage world. Kaorin acts as her teacher,
interpreter, bodyguard, confidant, uncorruptable friend, etc.
