ZAGOR COMICS IN TURKEY
Zagor is arguably the most popular comics in Turkey. Except for vey brief intervals, it has always been in circulation in this country since 1970.
Actually, the Turkish debut of
Zagor goes back to 1962, only one year after its creation in Italy. However, the first Turkish Zagor comics, published weekly by Ceylan Yaynlar, turned out to be short-lived and ceased publication after 32 issues (Ceylan's Zagor is one of the most rare and sought-after comics in the Turkish collectors scene; only a few collectors are known to possess samples).
Zagor's Turkish breakthrough came in 1970 with Tay Yaynlar's weekly with glossy covers featuring art by Turkish artists such as Yaln and Arslan. Tay's weekly Zagor lasted until 1979, with 465 issues. Back issues were re-bound and re-marketed as 'volumes' and after the weekly format was ceased, the 'volumes' series (later named as 'albums') continued on its own with reprints as well as new adventures until 1995 with more than a total of 500 volumes/albums in four different series.
Tay's short-lived successor Ecem Yaynlar briefly put out a biweekly
Yeni Zagor albums series which for the first time in Turkey featured original Italian cover art.
Currently,
Zagor is being published in Turkey by Lal Kitap.
