CONAN COMICS IN TURKEY
Conan comics appears to have been first published in Turkey in 1980. However, there are some indications and unconfirmed reports that an earlier debut might have occurred. In 1973, ads appeared in Blent Hazer's Amazon comics promoting an untitled new heroic fantasy comics which looked a lot like Conan, said to be bestselling abroad, to be published soon. It is not known if Hazer went ahead and eventually published it. Besides these obscure ads from 1973, one index of comics published in Turkey lists a Conan entry from 1978.
Nevertheless, Ali Recan's
Alfa Yaynlar began publishing Conan in 1980 as a weekly comics, licensed from Kesim Ajans, a Turkish subcontractor of foreign copyrights. It became very popular with Turkish readers and was one of the bestselling comics in Turkey in the 1980s when the comics business was in a decline; it can be said that Alfa not only managed to survive thanks to Conan, but became one of the leading comics publishers of the decade on strenght of this comics. Alfa's first Conan series, which was close to pocket-size, lasted for 66 issues. Its second weekly series which began in 1982 on the other hand was larger than standard size and lasted for 86 issues. Most of the covers featured art from the American editions, but some had covers by Turkish artist mer Muz (who signed his art simply as 'mer'). These two series published stories from Savage Sword of Conan, but in a frustratingly haphazard order. Simultanously with these weekly series, shorter lived bi-weekly series published stories from Conan the Barbarian. Alfa's third major series started in 1982 initially on a weekly basis, but eventually shifted into bi-weekly and later monthly periods; this series lasted for 204 issues in total until 1995. Meanwhile, several 'collection' series published reprints.
After a four year hiatus, Alfa began publishing reprints once again, this time in the correct chronological order. Curiously, Aksoy Yaynlar also began publishing a monthly
Conan comics in 2000, so for several years Conan comics were put out by two different publishers! Ironically, both publishing houses went out of business in 2002. Since 2004, Conan is being published by Lal Kitap Yaynlar.
