Who's Who
in Roman Military Studies

In an attempt to aid Roman Military studies, this listing is an informal compilation of every scholar, expert and historian of the Roman military that we can identify. It includes not just current scholars but past pioneers and giants in the field. While currently a static alphabetized list, I hope to enter this information into a more useful database format soon.

We would like to list at a minimum:  name, title, specialities, university/organization, physical address, publications and website. We are of several minds on the email presently, but if it is publicly available we will list it. This information is not available for every individual, but we are always trying to fill in the gaps.

This Who's Who is compiled (as of 1/25/2004) by Richard Campbell for the Roman Army website edited by Jenny Cline, Jasper Oorthuys, and Sander Van Dorst.

Should you be able to add to or correct this list, please email me at [email protected], or leave a message at the Roman Army Talk board

As a parallel effort, we will institute a Who's Who for Roman Civilian scholars, experts and historians. This listing will proceed in earnest as the structure of the database is finalized.

Currently, our broad categories are:
  • Epigraphy
  • Archaeology
  • Military equipment
  • Military Theory
  • Rank Structure
  • Military Intelligence
On Presentation & Reconstruction

I am compiling a Who's Who of Roman Reenactment as a recognition of these unique achievements. Currently this includes the categories:
"Reconstruction" which recognizes those amateurs & non-professionals who have developed accurate reconstructions of Roman military and equipment based solely on archaeological and historical sources, and who have made a significant difference in the diffusion of knowledge and enthusiasm about the Roman army.
"Internet Presentation" for those people who have developed a presentation that can only be done with Internet technologies, and

G.L. Cheesman  see:

www.csad.ox.ac.uk/CSAD

He was a supervisor on the Corbridge excavations prior to WW1, a position he gained because it was one of Haverfield's projects (he staffed it with his acolytes). A site notebook in his hand survives in the site museum archive.
