By way of an explanation, and justification, for us being involved in the �Elephant Hunt� in the
First place, this followed a request to the Battalion from the �Local� Village Chiefs.  For some
Considerable time, they had been troubled by a group of �Marauding Elephants� which basically
were continually decimating their �Banana Plantations�.  As these animals consumed several
hundredweight of food every day � eating non stop for 16 hours out of every 24 � it doesn�t take
much imagination to realise, the effect that this would have on the �Main Source� of income for
these people, so it was decided to help them out. Whilst it was �exciting to all involved� no
pleasure was taken from �killing� such magnificent animals.

I  worked as �Orderly� to , as he was then, Major �The Honourable� P. Freyberg OBE. MC. From the latter
part of 1953 following the departure � on �demob� -  of Ron Barrett, who had finished his �National Service Engagement.
During the period from 1953 until 1970.  I moved with him wherever he served,  This meant service in Egypt, Malta, Cyprus,
The Cameroon�s and ended with him at the HAC. Leaving when he was posted to London District.
I then joined the 2nd Bn and stayed with them until I completed my 22 years service in 1972.
