It is with sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of 2616117 WRIGHT Douglas MM Chelsea Pensioner and London Branch. Enlisted at STOCKPORT into the Grenadier Guards. He did his basic training at the Guards depot CATERHAM. He joined the King�s Coy 1st Bn at CHELSEA before moving to FRANCE as part of the BEF. The Bn dug in at LILLE and took part in the withdrawal to DUNKIRK acting as rearguard. He landed at SHEERNESS and moved up to LIVERPOOL before the Bn reformed at DINTON, then Bn was stationed in WILTSHIRE and DORSET. He joined the 6th Bn Grenadier Guards as a L/Sgt and moved on to North Africa to join 201 Gds Bde and moved up to SYRIA. He then volunteered for the SAS and joined 1 SAS under David Stirling and later under Lord Jellicoe Coldstream Guards and he switched to the SBS. He carried out raids in SARDINIA, CRETE and YUGOSLAVIA. He won the MM at AMORGOS, a Greek island. He returned to WINDSOR to the Trg Bn and was medically discharged. He rejoined in 1956 and did a Cpls course, went out to MALTA and moved on to CYPRUS and was made Pioneer Sergeant of 3 Bn. He was posted back to the Trg Bn 1st Bn Scots Guards as Pioneer Sergeant as his wife was ill. He was then posted to 3rd Bn Grenadier Guards in 1959 as Police Sergeant. He moved to the 1st Bn at TIDWORTH. In 1961 he was posted with the Bn to the CAMEROONS and then moved to CHELSEA in 1962. He was posted as a butcher to PIRBRIGHT at the Guards Depot and then posted to 1st Bn in HUBBELRATH and later WUPPERTAL in 4 Gds Bde. He went on a UN tour to CYPRUS in 1965 and was posted back to CATERHAM with 1st Bn. In 1968 he went to SHARJAH and was then posted to PIRBRIGHT to the Guards Depot before being discharged in 1970. |
