Shrewsbury Town ASFC v AFTU Fans

Shrewsbury Town ASFC 1 - AFC Telford Utd Fans 4
Venue: Meole Brace, Shrewsbury
Date: 30/07/05
Kick Off: 10.30 am

AFC Telford Fans picked up their fourth win on the trot with a 4-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town ASFC. The game started fairly evenly with neither side able to get on top until a through ball from Jason Windsor released Mike Nadal down the left flank who was then clumsily brought down in the penalty area by a Shrewsbury defender. The penalty was somewhat nervously converted by Richard Manns to give AFC Telford the lead. After this AFC Telford grew in confidence and began to take the game to Shrewsbury . Ten minutes later Telford furthered their advantage with an individual effort from Windsor. The pacey midfielder skinned a couple of Town players before beating the Shrewsbury goalie from 20 yards with a little help from a fortunate bounce just in front of the 'keeper. The 2-0 disadvantage certainly sparked the Shrewsbury team into life and they began to dictate the game. It's fair to say Shrewsbury had the most of the play during the final 15 minutes of the first half and deservedly reduced the deficit with a well taken finish at the backpost after good work down the right wing.

HT. Shrewsbury Town 1 AFC Telford 2

A brief team talk from AFC Telfords newly appointed manager, Jonah, certainly sparked the Telford team back into life. The central pairing of Windsor and Groves began to dictate the midfield, whilst Telfords two central defenders, Pearson and Catling, were seemingly impossible to break down as Telford began to take control of the second half. The impressive Matty Dickinson, on his debut, gave Telford a 3-1 advantage ten minutes into the second half with the best goal of the game. Right back Greg Paul picked up the ball in his own area before playing the ball infield to Richard Manns who then turned and released the substitute Dickinson who brilliantly controlled and finished the move from the edge of the area. Moments later Shrewsbury were a little unlucky not to reduce the lead with a decent effort from the edge of the area which flew just over the cross bar. But it was Telford who looked the more likely to score again and the goal came through big centre forward Chris "Scouse" Wilson, who brilliantly beat the Shrewsbury 'keeper to a long throw from Dickinson to head home Telfords fourth. Both teams had decent opportunities in the remaining 20 minutes to grab a goal, but neither side could finish these chances off. A good counter attacking move between Catling, Manns, Wilson and McNally nearly resulted in a goal for Telford and Mike Nadal spurned a decent opportunity after beating the Shrewsbury defence. Manns also had a headed goal disallowed for a marginal offside decision after good work from Mike Sheridan, but in the end the 4-1 scoreline was a fair reflection of the game and rounded off a brilliant performance from the AFCTU fans team.

A brief thankyou to both the Shrewsbury Team for getting the game organised and to the referee whose performance was far greater than that of Rob Lewis in the Shropshire Senior Cup the night before!
