| Edward H. White, II (1930-1967) |
||||||||
| Ed White was selected as an astronaut in NASA's second class (1962). White made his only space flight in 1965 when he served as the pilot onboard Gemini-IV. During this mission, he became the first American to walk in space. In 1966 Ed White was assigned to serve as the CMP on the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 1, which was slated to launch in February of 1967. On January 27, 1967, White and the rest of the Apollo 1 crew were sealed inside their capsule during a routine launch simulation. During the simulation, there was a spark from a frayed wire which started a fire. The fire quickly spread throughout the capsule killing the three-man crew in seconds. White perished with his crew inside their capsule on top of an unfueled rocket during a routine simulation. This was NASA's first major space disaster. During his single mission, White logged 4 days in space. My Collection: This is an autographed 3x5 unlined notecard. |
