Gennadi M. Strekalov
Gennadi Strekalov was selected as a cosmonaut in 1973.  His first mission was in 1980 when he served as flight engineer on Soyuz T-3.  Next, he was the flight engineer on Soyuz T-8 in April of 1983.  For his third mission, Strekalov was assigned to serve as flight engineer on Soyuz T-10; a mission to agument the Salyut 7 solar arrays.  On September 26, 1983, about a minute before the scheduled launch a fire broke out at the base of the rocket.  The crew was saved by the emergency escape system which pulled the capsule off the pad and away from the rocket only seconds before it exploded.  They landed safely only minutes later without going into space.  This mission attempt was redesignated Soyuz T-10-1 (another mission designated Soyuz T-10 and flew five months later with a different crew and mission objectives).  In 1984, Strekalov was assigned to be flight engineer on Soyuz T-11.  Next, he served as flight engineer on Soyuz TM-10 in 1990; this was the Mir-7 mission.  His final mission came in 1995 when he served as flight engineer on Soyuz TM-21 (Mir-18).  This was the historic mission which sent the first American astronaut to the Mir space station; the mission ended after four months when the space shuttle mission STS-71 docked at the station to replace the crew.  They returned on STS-71.  Strekalov retired in 1995 having spent 268 days in space during his six missions (five of them being space flights).
