Donald K. "Deke" Slayton
(1924-1993)
Deke Slayton was selected as an astronaut in NASA's first class and is therefore a member of the original "Mercury 7" (1959).  Due to a minor heart problem, Slayton was removed from the active flight rotation during the Mercury program and as a result never flew a Mercury mission.  His only mission didn't come until 1975 when he served as the Docking Module Pilot onboard the American half of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.  Slayton retired from the astronaut corps in 1982 having spent 9 days in space.  On June 13, 1993, Deke Slayton died of complications from a brain tumor.

My Collection: This is a space card that Slayton has signed twice, once in a black pen which didn't show up well and again in a silver pen.
