| Walter M. Schirra, Jr. | ||||||||
| Walter Schirra was selected as an astronaut in NASA's first class and is therefore a member of the original "Mercury 7" (1959). During his career, he made three flights into space and is the only person to fly on Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo spacecraft. His first mission was to command Mercury Atlas 8 "Sigma 7" which was in 1962. Next, he served as commander of Gemini-VI-A in 1965. His third and final mission came in 1968 when he commanded the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 7. Schirra retired from the astronaut office in 1969 having logged 12 days in space. My Collection: This is a space card featuring the Mercury 7 astronauts which Schirra has autographed. |
