| Sally Ride was selected as an astronaut in NASA's eighth class (1978). Her first mission was in 1983 when she flew as a mission specialist on STS-7. During this mission, she became the first American woman to fly in space. Next, she served as a mission specialist on board STS-41-B in 1984.
