Judith A. Resnik
(1949-1986)
Judith Resnik was selected as an astronaut in NASA's eighth class (1978).  Her first mission assignment came in 1984 when she flew as a mission specialist on board STS-41-D.  This was the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle Discovery.  Her second mission was as a mission specialist on the ill-fated STS-51-L flight in 1986.  On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off marking the beginning of the STS-51-L mission.  73 seconds later, there was a large explosion which destroyed the shuttle and killed the crew.  Resnik was lost as were six other astronauts.  During her career, she logged 6 days in space.

My Collection: This is an astronaut warter survival course cover which Resnik has autographed (as have 13 other astronauts).  There is a close up of her signature below the image.
