Valeri V. Polyakov
Valeri Polyakov was selected as a cosmonaut in 1972.  During his career, he made two long-duration flights to Mir serving as the mission doctor.  His first mission began in August of 1988 when he was launched to Mir onboard Soyuz TM-6 and joined the Mir-3 crew (which was making a historic 1 year mission) mid-expedition; his position on the crew was listed as "Doctor Cosmonaut."  Once the Mir-3 mission ended, Polyakov remained on Mir with the Mir-4 crew.  He returned to Earth in April of 1989 with the Mir-4 crew following a 240 day stay in space.  Polyakov's second and most famous mission began on January 8, 1994, when he was lauched to Mir on Soyuz TM-18 as a member of the Mir-15 crew, once again he was the doctor cosmonaut.  He would remain on Mir when the Mir-15 crew was replaced by Mir-16 (joining the Mir-16 crew) , he would also remain onboard and join the Mir-17 crew when they flew to the station.  He finally returned home on March 22, 1995, with the Mir-17 crew having spent 437 consecutive days in space; this is the longest manned flight in history.  Polyakov retired in 1995 having spent 678 days in space, he has spent the second longest time in space.
