Ellison S. Onizuka
(1946-1986)
Ellison Onizuka was selected as an astronaut in NASA's eighth class (1978).  He made two flights on board the space shuttle during his career.  His first mission came in 1985 when he flew as a mission specialist on board STS-51-C.  His second mission assignment was on the ill-fated STS-51-L mission.  On January 28, 1986, STS-51-L was launched and on it was Onizuka who was serving as a mission specialist.  73 seconds into launch, there was an explosion which resulted in the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger and the loss of the crew.  Onizuka, along with the rest of the crew, died in the accident.  During his career, he logged 3 days in space.

My Collection: This is a astronaut water survival training cover which Onizuka has autographed (as have 13 other astronauts).  His signature can be seen close-up below the cover image.
