Oleg G. Makarov
(1933-2003)
Oleg Makarov was selected as a cosmonaut in 1966.  Makarov made his first voyage into space in 1973 when he served as the flight engineer on Soyuz 12.  Next, Makarov was selected as the flight engineer for Soyuz 18 in 1975.  This mission was ended during the launch when a stage failed to seperate, as a result the energency espace rockets fired and pulled the capsule away from the rocket; this flight never made it into space.  This mission was redesignated Soyuz 18-1 (another mission would fly with the Soyuz 18 designation a few months later).  He then served as the flight engineer of Soyuz 27 in 1978.  His final mission came in 1980 when he flew as flight engineer on Soyuz T-3.  He retired in 1986 having logged 20 days in space.  On May 28, 2003, Oleg Makarov died of a heart attack.
