Vasili G. Lazarev
(1928-1990)
Vasili Lazarev was selected as a cosmonaut in 1964.  He made his only spaceflight in 1973 when he commanded the flight of Soyuz 12.  He was selected to command Soyuz 18 in 1975, but this mission was ended during the launch when a stage failed to seperate; the energency escape system was activated which pulled the capsule containing the crew away from the rocket.  This mission never made it into space and was redesignated Soyuz 18-1 (another mission would fly with the Soyuz 18 name later).  Lazarev retired in 1985 having spent just under 2 days in space during his only flight.  On December 31, 1990, Vasili Lazarev died of alcohol poisoning.
