Yuri A. Gagarin
(1934-1968)
Yuri Gagain was selected as a cosmonaut in 1960 and is the most famous of all the Russian cosmonauts.  His only space flight came on April 12, 1961, when he flew as the commander of Vostok 1.  This historic mission, which only lasted one orbit of the Earth, made Gagain the first man to fly in space.  Following the mission, Gagain became a national hero and as a result was not allowed to fly in space again.  On March 27, 1968, Yuri Gagarin was killed in the crash of a Mig-15 trainer aircraft; he was only 34 years old.  During his only flight Gagarin logged 1 hour and 48 minutes in space..

My Collection: This is an autographed Soviet postcard which commemorates the 5th anniversary of the Vostok 1 flight.
