| L. Gordon Cooper, Jr. | ||||||||
| Gordon Cooper was selected as an astronaut in NASA's first class and is therefore a member of the original "Mercury 7" (1959). While serving as an astronaut, he made two flights into space. His first mission came at the end of the Mercury program when he was given the command of Mercury Atlas 9, which was named "Faith 7," in 1963. His one day Mercury flight would prove to be the last of the program and by far the longest. He also flew as the commander of the Gemini-V mission in 1965. Many consider this mission the event which thrust America into the lead in the space race, this mission broke the Soviet spaceflight endurance record (8 days). Cooper retired from NASA in 1970 having spent 9 days in space. My Collection: This is a "Popsicle Space Card" signed by Cooper. |
