| Michael Coats was selected as an astronaut in NASA's eighth class (1978). The first of his three missions came in 1984 when he served as the pilot onboard STS-41-D, this was the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Next, he commanded STS-29 in 1989. His final mission came in 1991 when he commanded the STS-39 flight. Coats retired from the astronaut corps in 1991 having logged 19 days in space.
