| Daniel Brandenstein was selected as an astronaut in NASA's eighth class (1978). During his career, he flew on four space shuttle missions. In 1983, he served as the pilot for the STS-8 mission on board the Space Shuttle Challenger. Next, he was given command of STS-51-G which flew in 1985. Brandenstein's third mission was STS-32 which he commanded in 1990. His final mission came in 1992 when he commanded STS-49, this was the maiden voyage of NASA's newest orbiter: the Space Shuttle Endeavour. He reitred from NASA in 1992 having spent 32 days in space.
