| Michael P. Anderson was selected as an astronaut in NASA's fifteenth class (1995). During his career, he made two space flights on board the space shuttle. On his first mission, STS-89, Anderson served as a mission specialist and flew to the Russian Space Station Mir in January of 1998. His second mission was STS-107. Launched into space on January 16, 2003, STS-107 was a mission based heavily on scientific research during which Anderson served as its Payload Commander. The mission was scheduled to land on February 1, 2003 at the Kennedy Space Center. During reentry, the Space Shuttle Columbia broke up over Texas which resulted in the vehicle being destroyed and the crew lost. Anderson was killed along with the rest of his crew. During his career, he logged 24 days in space. My Collection: This is an offical 8x10 litho signed by the crew of STS-107. Anderson can be seen third from the right (he's the African-American man in the back row). His autograph was fairly common until his death because he signed a lot of autographs. Since he was killed, it has become a very popular item and is usually expensive. |
