For many years now, it has been my habit, when someone asks how I am, to reply:"Fair."
Not too bad. Not cloyingly good. Just aiming for that golden mean.
I was the despair of my friend Kate, who constantly reminded me that the proper response, when asked how I'm doing, is along the lines of:
"Fine! And you?"
I ran all this past my co-worker Brandi, who agreed maybe it was time to add to my standard repertoire.
"I don't know," I said. "What word am I looking for? Not too bad, not too good..."
"Tolerable," she said.
"Oh," I said. "Oh, that's good."
How am I doing? Tolerably well.
How are things? Tolerable.
