I seem to have an invitation to join someone for the Chef's Gala at the Broadmoor at the end of the month. It's $85 a head. How to explain that for a while a more typical outing for me would be heading to Walmart at lunchtime to see what samples they're serving up.If someone is headed off on a cruise in March, how to explain that my trip to South Dakota in May is an all-expenses-paid outing that I won from Great American Country Television? (Well, how to explain all that in the first place.)
It is not imperative that I find someone to go see Martin, Medeski and Wood on the 22nd. I might even live if I don't have a date for the Cassandra Wilson show in the middle of next month. It's not really necessary that I find someone by the end of November to help use up the three resort nights I earned for sitting through a time-share pitch back in October.
On the other hand, I do have to figure out a way to afford a trip to El Paso at the beginning of March to take part in that documentary the Canadians are making about Manos. Perhaps I need to call on some old friends and beg for crash space. Hey, I just realized that will put me on the road at the end of the month. I'd hate for the trip to end up costing me in the neighborhood of $85.
