Here's a 1995 newspaper photo of me playing in a Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots tournament at that year's Bubonicon in Albuquerque. That was actually one of the last conventions I went to before this weekend... I was dragooned into sending out PSA's to the radio and television stations for this weekend's convention in Colorado Springs, although in large part I'm reminded of why I moved away from Texas to get away from working on events like this one...To their credit they did get quite a lovely story in the arts section of The Independent. (The Colorado Springs free paper, not the one in the UK.) Although when I saw the headline--No Borg Allowed--I said to myself, Well. That's gonna cost us.
I can see that's one of my t-shirts from my old job at KDBC-TV news that I'm wearing. Later, when I was a at a convention in Phoenix, I met Buzz Aldrin and had him sign that shirt. Right next to The Eagle, of course.
I guess I really did have some good times over the years of attending and working on cons: getting to travel all over the country, meeting lots of good people. For one thing I got to meet more famous people at cons (Francis Coppola, Robert Wise, Roger Corman) than working in TV news (John Gavin, Linda Blair, William F. Buckley). If only I can dip my toe back into it without getting sucked into too much work.
