My Life As A Spammer

Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my mugshot
The reason why I didn't get as much rest as I expected after calling in sick today, and rather ironically so in light of yesterday's entry:

My interconnect connection unexpectedly failed on me this afternoon, and when I called my ISP, they immediately referred to what turned out to be their Enforcement number. It turns out someone had planted a worm on my system and was using me to relay vast quantities of unsolicited e-mail. The agent I spoke to turned my connection back on with the proviso that I clean up my system within 24 hours.

So I spent most of my day upgrading my firewall and antivirus software, and cleaning out my system of any infected files. Keep those protections current, people, especially if you're using such an essentially insecure pathway to the Internet such as a cable-modem ISP, the way I do. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anybody.
