Do you know the Strangler's Cd Feline?  I think life begins there.  It was written and recorded in Caligula's Rome.  You may have heard the single "Golden Brown" on the radio.  It's rare to hear a waltz tribute to heroin.

I remember liking the album in high school.

I was a Rush fan.  Most particularly of the albums
Spirit of Radio and Moving Pictures.  Before that point Rush was heavy and guitar heavy.  After those two cds, Rush was light and synthesizer-riden.  The two albums mentioned above have the best balance of guitar and synthesizer.

The Stranglers and Rush were two of best bands in the history of the world.  A third great band was Dexy's Midnight Runners.  Dexy's were not a one-hit wonder.  Van Morrison was a huge fan of theirs and was present while the second cd was being recorded.  Kevin Rowland of Dexy's fame recently released a cd after not having been on stage in 14 years.  It is called
My Beauty and is the most inspirational cd I've ever heard.

The two most worthless bands of all time are the Grateful Dead and Phish.  Did you know (this is all documented in the book
Mind Control/World Control, page 179), did you know that an FBI internal memo from 1968 mentions "the employment of Gerry Garcia as an avenue to channel youth dissent and rebellion into more benign and non-threatening directions..    The Grateful Dead provided a vital service in distracting many young persons into drugs and mysticism rather than politics."

I knew instinctively that their music was bullshit.  A friend talked me into paying 30 dollars for a Phish ticket to get a look at the phenomenon.  I walked out at intermission and waited in the rain until the end of the concert for my friend.  Although I was no John Lennon fan particularly, his career is a great contrast to that of the Dead.  John was killed for his political activism and The Grateful Dead were state-sanctioned for their career in bullshit.

Dexys were dissatisfied and wanted to know more than the other guy knew, The Stranglers were interested in the gritty side of life, Rush interested in the big relationships: Man and machine, Man and nature, etc.
None of the three were as political as Phil Ochs but just the same, more challenging than most bands and at the peak of their powers, legendary.
