Activities A special meeting and work day was held on April 22 on the patio on the west side of the New Berlin Public Library. Members of the Ecology Association worked for about an hour destroying some of the dogwood and other invasive plants in the E.A.N.B. demonstration prairie. The regular meeting was held on the patio following the work activity. The prairie is expanding very well on its own now that it has been established, and need a little help for this expansion to continue. Last year on May 17, 2003, the May E.A.N.B. meeting was held on the Library patio overlooking the Lions Park prairie and pond. Paul Gihring gave a brief presentation regarding the prairie plot. The initial planting was done in 1977. Newspaper clippings of the event were shown. A few posters and other information from later years were shown, including guided prairie tours that were given by members. A description was given on work done in the past to control invasive species and expanding the prairie plot. A few more volunteers could be used to help mark the prairie plants and check the inventory against past records.

Composting Video Three members of the Ecology Association produced an 8 minute video showing the steps used to compost leaves. The purpose of the video was to show that simple methods can be used to convert "yard waste" into a valuable supplement for gardens, shrubs, and flower beds. The video was shown multiple times on the City's cable channel in November. In the future we would like to expand on the video by following up on the compost demonstrations and including more examples. Anyone wishing to share their composting efforts is encouraged to contact Paul Gihring at 262-786-2246. Compost Bin Update
Photo at the left was taken on November 5, 2003 as part of the video. Photo on the right was taken on February 14, 2004. Composting has already reduced the volume of leaves, and will continue all winter at a rate depending on the temperature.
