A. Introduction
1. Prayer
2. 2 weeks ago, Father Stevens quoted: “Day by day, dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day.” (Richard Of Chichester 1197–1253)
3. Tonight: We will try to see more clearly about what Jesus said about himself
a. Christology; actually “Reflexive Christology”
4. Ground Rules:
a. Respect, though also challenge with respect, everyone’s voice
(1) Especially respect your own: “The only stupid question is the one you didn’t ask.”
b. For Tonight
(1) Forget what know about Jesus, what Church has taught about him
(2) Question the Bible, do not take at literal meaning – trust that it will survive our questions
c. We will (tonight) consider one aspect of Christology at a time,
(1) Luke – lectionary this year
(2) Do not blur Luke together with Matthew & Mark
5. Different viewers will have different viewpoints, neither agreeing nor mutually exclusive
a. Example: 9/11/1 (roughly Mt, Mk, Lk, Jn)
(1) Three viewpoints:
(a) My sister in office in Atlanta
(b) Man I know who was in a building in NY where he could see
(c) Myself, a hospital chaplain seeing over and over on TV while trying to calm patients
(2) Another man who was on the street in NY, telling 60 years later
(a) Facts maybe remembered more differently, but possibly more “truth” because of time to process and make sense of
(3) John like this, therefore John is off limits tonight
(a) We want to get a more direct, raw, unprocessed Jesus
(b) John still valid: There will be a handout at the end with the “I am . . . “ sayings.
B. 7:30 (5+10): Temptation of Christ in Luke 4.1-13
1. Do example first of “reading between lines”
a. “My sister in office on 9/11/1.” – what say about me?
(1) I am not an only child, I have a sister.
(2) My family is not all in one place.
(3) etc
2. Handout #1
a. 5 min to look at handout, then discuss together
C. 7:45: Three Common Titles for Jesus
1. Messiah = Christ
a. Anointed one (generic)
b. Anointed Davidic King
c. J avoided the title
(1) Especially, the Romans would not have liked a claim to the Davidic throne
2. Son of God
a. Any person with special relationship to God: Adam, Moses, David, Elijah, etc
b. Likely used by church after Easter and read into Jesus a/o his baptism
(1) functional use / role only
c. Metaphysical role: Johannine development and dogmatized in Nicea & Chalcedon (325, 451 AD)
(1) Was from beginning; functional role only at baptism
3. Son of Man
a. God’s end-time agent of salvation & judgement
b. Never defined by Jesus
(1) Prob Jesus meant self, but not necs
D. 8:00 (5+10): Jesus’ Trial before the Sanhedrin in Luke 22.54-71

“Jesus Talks about Himself – or Not” The Temptation of Jesus in Luke Luke 4.1-13 (NRSV)
Temptation |
Jesus’ Response |
Deuteronomy Source |
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, [2] where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. [3] The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." |
[4] Jesus answered him, 'It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.' " |
Deuteronomy 8:3 (NRSV) He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. |
[5] Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. [6] And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. [7] If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." |
[8] Jesus answered him, 'It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'" |
Deuteronomy 6:13 (NRSV) The LORD your God you shall fear; him you shall serve, and by his name alone you shall swear. |
[9] Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, [10] for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' [Ps 91.11a] [11] and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.' " [Ps 91.12] |
[12] Jesus answered him, 'It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" |
Deuteronomy 6.16 (NRSV) [16] Do not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. |
Some Context of Satan’s Scripture Quote: Psalm 91:3-6, 9-10 (NRSV) [3] For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; [4] he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. [5] You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, [6] or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday. [9] Because you have made the LORD your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, [10] no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. |
||
[13] When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. |

The Temptation of Jesus in Luke
discussion questions
1 What are the three temptations the devil presented to Jesus? (Don’t just copy the verses, summarize them. Eg, “fix the election” or “steal the temple furnishings”) |
2 What does Jesus say about himself in his 3 responses? (Make sure to also consult the passages he quotes form Deuteronomy.) |
Lk 4.1-3 |
Lk 4.4 |
Lk 4.5-7 |
Lk 4.8 |
Lk 4.9-11 |
Lk 4.12 |
3 Like Jesus, the devil also knew Scripture, and in Lk 4.10-11 he quoted Psalm 91.11-12. Do you think he made appropriate use of scripture? (Look the other excerpts from Ps 91 that are to the right of the 2 verses the devil quoted.) |
4 How successful do you think Jesus was at resisting the devil? |

Jesus’ Trial Before the High Priest
Luke 22.54–71: (NRSV)
[54] Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. [55] When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. [56] Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, "This man also was with him." [57] But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." [58] A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" [59] Then about an hour later still another kept insisting, "Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean." [60] But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about!" At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. [61] The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times." [62] And he went out and wept bitterly.
[63] Now the men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him; [64] they also blindfolded him and kept asking him, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" [65] They kept heaping many other insults on him.
[66] When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council. [67] They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." He replied, "If I tell you, you will not believe; [68] and if I question you, you will not answer. [69] But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." [70] All of them asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say that I am." [71] Then they said, "What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!"
