Below are some essential programs that you will need when adding files to Flight Simulator.
Before you can start adding planes you need Winzip because nearly all downloads are compressed to keep file size (and therefore download time) down. When you have finished downloading you need to decompress (unzip) the new files, to do this you use Winzip.
Gozilla is a download manager allows the user to locate downloads easily and also to resume downloads if he/she gets disconnected or simply wants to carry on some other time. This feature is particularly helpful when making big downloads.
This site is certainly worth a look at. You can download the shareware version (a payment must be made to register the download and unlock the entire program) of FS Traffic at this site. FS Traffic is a program that adds customizable aircraft/ground traffic around an airport. Up to 30 aircraft traffic can be set at once and you can set ground vehicles such as trucks etc to move around as well.
Download the Roger Wilco program for use in multiplayer flight. Roger Wilco allows people with microphones on their computers to talk to other players during flight. Worth downloading even if just as a test because the file is quite small.

For a whole range of additional utilities and downloads visit the above link. It will take you to simtakeoff.com's download page.
A download manager with a difference, this program allows you to begin downloading a file, pause the download and resume from where you left off. As a guide line, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 Professional Edition runs fairly well on the below set up that we currently run, the set up is composed of:
Windows 98 Millenium Edition (ME)
450Mhz AMD K6-2 Processor
192Mb PC-100 RAM
16Gb Hard drive
Rage Fury MAXX 64Mb video card
52x CD-ROM
Direct X 8.0
Mouse, Keyboard, Joystick (Squadron Commander)
On the above configuration with all detail settings minimised we rank around 10-15 FPS (Frames Per Second) when following the plane from the outside and 25-55 FPS in the cockpit. This is fine for instrument flying (IFR) but does not help when trying to fly by Visual Flight Rules (VFR) when more ground detail is needed. We recommend that the above configuration is the minimum recommendation for playing FS2000. Hold Shift and press Z twice to display your FPS count.
If your looking to buy a new PC or upgrade your existing machine we recommend that you investigate the following possibilities:
PIII, P4 or Athlon Processor: You will want to try and get the fastest CPU available in your price bracket. Remember that some chips perform better than others of the same specification e.g. a 500Mhz AMD K6-2 processor on a 100Mhz Bus will run slower than a 500Mhz PIII running on a 133Mhz Bus.
128Mb+ RAM: The more memory your system has the smoother it will be able to produce pictures on your screen. More memory means that your CPU is not struggling to keep updating the picture on the screen.
Quick 32Mb Graphics card: A nice, fast graphics card with lots of memory helps take some of the strain away from your processor. Try to get a card with at least 32Mb RAM with 64 and even 128Mb being preferable.
