RENAULT 4 EXTRA

BESTSELLERS CHART

The Renault 4 is one of the best-selling models of all time. As more markets open up, especially the Indian and chinese markets, cars are likely to attain bigger sales in shorter periods of time which makes the Renault 4's feat all the more remarkable. However it is probably not going to last forever. Here is the chart of the best sellers ever which appeared in Auto Express in November 2003:

#1 Volkwagen Beetle

"21,529,464 of the lovable German Bug were sold between 1939 and 2003."

#2 Ford Model T

"15,007,033 found owners from the cars' arrival in 1908 to the end of its production in 1927." When the Volkswagen Beetle's production overtook that of the Ford Model T, Ford 'discovered' that it had actually sold a few million more than previously stated. Nevertheless, the Volkswagen Beetle overtook it again.

#3 Fiat 124/VAZ 2101/Lada Riva

"14,543,000 sold since Fiat was introduced in 1966 (Lada in 1970), and ongoing." Though the Lada Riva has been vastly modified, underneath it is still the Fiat 124 that saw the light of day in 1966. The car was sold to a huge market over which it had a monopoly at an unnaturally low price so it is unsurprising that it has achieved such high sales. It was described by a Lotus engineer as "the worst car I've ever driven". This car is likely to overtake the sales of the Model T in the near future

#4 Renault 4

"8,135,422 of the simple French runabout were produced between 1961 and 1993" Here it is, and what a coincidence, it's at number 4. But that production figure is not entirely accurate.

#5 Volkswagen Golf Mk 1

"6,842,200 sold since it was introduced in 1974, and still on sale in South Africa" Volkswagen could not have hoped for more of a success to replace its mainstay Beetle. The Giugaro-designed original lives on today in south Africa as the CitiGolf.

#6 Fiat Uno

"6,500,000 built since its unveiling in 1983, and available in Brazil and Argentina today" Another Giugaro-design, the Uno's tall design is reputed to have been inspired by the Renault 4.

#7 Volkswagen Golf Mk 2

"6,300,987 of the German car's second incarnation were sold between 1983 and 1991"

#8 Renault 5 Mk 1

"5,471,701 example of this hatchback went to new owners from 1972 to 1983." The Renault 5 benefitted from R4 underpinnings and original simplistic style and reached number 1 in current European sales charts one year before its replacement in 1985.

#9 Mini

"5,387,862 of the diminutive legend were bought between its introduction in 1959 and 2000." It sold five million before 1980 and sold in dribs and drabs until its makers took it off its life-support machine in 2001. It lost far more money than it ever made. But none of that really matters. It is a cult car that was the first car of many.

#10 Renault 5 Mk 2

"4,943,629 were sold from when it replaced the Mk 1 in 1983 until 1996" This model was introduced in 1985 and its LCV variation is still in production.
