1842 - James White, Last Will and Testament

Transcript

James White was a fellow convict aboard the Thames and appears in the Thames indent immediately after David Poultney. James was one of the Merevale Poachers that were tried immediately after the Newham Paddox poachers. James and David appear to have become close friends and in this transcript of James' will, David Poultney (milkman) is named as executor.

This marriage was solemnized between us { John Mayford     Sarah White }
In the presence of us { x the mark of David Poultney      ?Patrick? Heyward }

Note: In this document, the grooms' name is spelt "Mayford" - this is believed to be John Mogford, one of the Merevale Poachers transported to Hobart along with James White. Sarah is believed to be James' widow, who he was married to in England and who he brought out to Tasmania. On Sarah's death & burial documents (further down this page) we see alternate spellings of "Mugford" and "Mogford". The spelling variations, as well as substantial age variations on Sarah's (and John's) age, make it tricky to guarantee that this is one and the same person throughout. The "glue" that holds it all together, though, is the name of David Poultney, and it is in that light that these documents are presented here.
