richardandtracy's Balloon Hovercraft Design.

This little article is on how to make an unusual little toy to amuse the kids. A balloon hovercraft. It will probably keep the kids amused for as long as it takes you to make it. It will, however, entertain adults for much longer (especially after a few drinks!). This is what it looks like when finished:-

So how is it made?

Materials.

You will need the following materials:-
1) An old CD
2) A Balloon
3) A Boss to stick to the CD hub
4) Adhesive (cyano-acrilate - 'Super Glue')

The only bit you need to make is the boss, to the drawing below:-

Drawing

The boss can be made from plastic, wood, aluminium, brass or steel. If either of the latter materials is used, try to make it as light and thin as possible otherwise you may have to open up the 3.5mm central hole a little, and the balloon will deflate more quickly. If making it out of plastic, wood or aluminium, try it initially with a 3mm central hole. You'll save air and it may go OK on your polished surface.

Assembly.

Stick the boss to the CD, allow the glue to set, then fit the balloon over the boss.

Use.

Inflate the balloon, pinch it's neck to stop the air escaping, then place the CD flat on a polished surface. Finally let go of the balloon and play with it!
