Buttonbush
Cephalanthus occidentalis
Family: Madder Cephalanthus
Leaves oval (2-7 in. long), shiny, dard green above; flowers fragrant, whitish, in globe-shaped clusters. Fruits round, warty, red-brown. Viewed with a magnifing glass, a buttonbush flower cluster shows exquisite detail. Each of the tiny blossms has petals fused into a narrow tube, a long and wispy pistil, and nectar glands at the base. Bees are a primary polinator.
Height: 5- 15 feet
Found: Swamps, pond and stream borders.
