Description: Shrot-lived, herbaceous perennial with white hairs covering the stems and leaves. The leaves are coarsely toothed; the lower ones are spatulate with the blade reduced to a winged petiole. The lanceolate upper leaves are sessile, clasping the stem. A series of green bracts are 3/8 to 1/2 inch long and surround the red, paintbrushlike flower heads.

Found: Pinelands, hammock margins, and disturbed sites throughout most of Florida. Native to the Old World.
