Four-Petaled St. John's-Wort or St. Peter's-Wort

Family: St. Johns-Wort (Hypericaceae)
Description: Open-branched, erect shrub to 3 feet tall but not bushy like other species. Distinctive, dull green, claspng leaves are broadly ovate and paired in 2 sizes. The X-shaped flowers have 4 yellow petals with 2 outer sepals that resemble leaves, and 2 narrower inner sepals. The flowers are about 1 inch wide and appear singly at the branch tips and leaf axils.
Blooms: March to November
Found: Flatwoods and pond margins from Georgia through peninsular Florida to Cuba.
