Primrose Willow

Family: Evening primrose (Onagraceae)



Description: This is the only Ludwigia that has leaves with a wing at the point of attachment. The wing continues down the stem for a short distance. There are 4 large, yellow petals and 8 stamens.
Stems: upright, 4-sided, branched or unbranched, smooth, up to 7 feet tall.
Leaves: are alternate, simple, lanceolate, pointed at the tip, tapering to the base and forming a narrow wing along the stem, without teeth, smooth or less commonly slightly hairy, up to 4 inches long.
Flowers: solitary in the axils of the leaves, up to 1/2 inch across, sessile or on a short stalk.
Sepals: 4, green, united below to form a long tube, the lobes up to 1/2 inch long.
Petals: 4, yellow, free from each other, up to 1/2 inch long.

Found: Wet ground, sloughs, swamps, along streams, ditches, ponds, sandy shores, shoals, often in shallow water.

Blooms: June to October
