| Rice Week 2005 - Behind the Scenes |
| Day 0 May 11, 10:13am (EST) Rice Consumed: 0 bowls Food Hallucinations: 0 Just a little something to get the ball rolling...less than two hours until this all gets started. A few thoughts beforehand. 1) Yesterday I drank two Jones Sodas, each of which had a little blurb of wisdom beneath the cap. The first one I drank said "Make no rash moves for now." I took this as a bad sign. The second one said "Your talents are in fine shape, utilize them to their fullest." Hopefully they were not referring to my talent of starting big things and then either falling asleep or stopping to watch Fear Factor. 2) I had a delicious last meal at Cottage Inn Pizza yesterday evening. I went for the Meat Sampler, which hopefully had enough protein to get me through next Wednesday.. 3) My dog, Sloane, eats dry dog kibble. It's the lamb and rice variety. This means for the next 7 days, I'll be eating half as nutritionally as my dog. I doubt this will stop her from begging for food, though. We'll see how she likes it when I start begging for little lamb kibbles. Day 1 May 11, 12:21pm (EST) Rice Consumed: 0.2 bowls (and counting) Most Recent Variety: Long grain white Food Hallucinations: 0 I am become Rice Week. Not much time for an entry now, but I had to mark the beginning of what is sure to be a unique 168 hour stretch of my life. The first bowl has been prepared, and is being consumed as I type. For the record, I will be using the same bowl for each "meal." It's a lovely 16oz glass affair that came free with some baking dishes. As it happens, it is exactly big enough to contain 1 cup of cooked rice. "Make no rash moves" my ass... Day 1 May 11, 4:26pm (EST) Rice Consumed: 1.0 bowls Food Hallucinations: 0.5 Number of Second Thoughts: 1.5 I just dazed off thinking about ice cream. I had to run to the grocery store a little bit ago to get some cleaning supplies for my upcoming move, and the long aisles of un-rice were practically laughing in my face. Earlier Alex found some song lyrics that are frighteningly appropriate (especially considering that it is a gray, rainy day here in Ann Arbor: "And the sky was gray and it looked like it might rain And I decided that I was only eating rice from then on." --from Rice by Dan Bern Perhaps towards the end of the week Alex, Jake, and I can put together a song of our own. I doubt it will be a very happy song...probably either a sad country tune (i.e. "I spilt my rice 'cuz my truck got stolen...") or an angry monster ballad (i.e. "The flaming priest of anti-Rice..."). For now, I end with a haiku. Rice is small and white. I wish eating it would make Me able to fly. PAGE 2 |
