Robert “BULL” Bullock

I was born in Chula Vista, CA on March 26th, 1964. I was the first of three brothers in a family of five. I did rather well in school. I was a three sport MVP in Football, Track and Wrestling. I even earned the National Football Foundation’s Scholar/Leader/Athlete award. After I graduated in 1982 I played a couple of years of Community College football, being named second team all league. I raced and thrashed BMX bikes from an early age, and rode practically everyday until I was twenty-eight. In 1985 my life was changed when I flew through the roof of a Toyota Land Cruiser and sustained a 100-stitch avulsion to my forehead. I don’t even remember the helicopter ride. This has become one of my great stories. Ask me sometime, I have a tale for every occasion…

I got back into the gym around 1995. I had many great training partners including Freddy Navarro, Aaron “Lumpy” Ross, and Brandon Goodman. I believe Aaron even squatted a 915, deadlifted a 775, and benched a 551 at different meets. In 1999 I peaked at a 675lb. squat, 500 bench, and a 585 dead. It wasn’t until June of 2000 at the San Diego Highland Games that I got the bug. I got second in the C class; I won the next game at Huntington Beach. One of my best games ever was when I won a large B class at Bakersfield. I had a tough time in the A’s, and currently throw as a 40-49 Master.

In the winter of 2001 a few guys I was throwing with agreed we should start a club. We will forever be remembered as “The Founding Fathers”. The names are: Brandon “Hellcat” Goodman, Jim “Bear” Perondi, Mike “The Natural” Vondle, and Robert “Bull” Bullock. I dreamt up the name “Black Sheep.” We chose the Black Stewart as our Tartan and Sport Kilt has been taking care of us since. Our first game as a team was the 2002 Queen Mary festival. It was at this game that Mike Vondle introduced me to my wife to be, Barbara. I can’t go much farther without talking about my good friend Frank Carl. He is a great Track and Field coach with a training “eye” like no other. It was at his house that Barb and I got married on May 29th, 2004 (Yes, I wore my Sport Kilt). Lastly, I mention Terry “Ricethrower” Sinsay. Without his tireless efforts we would not have this website or even it’s predecessor. I would like to thank TJ, and all who have helped our cause. A special appreciation goes to my wife who loves the games as I do.

I have had many great memories with my Black Sheep friends. I could ramble on for hours. We are a tight knit group that almost always is sticking around to pick up the weights at the end of a game. This level of commitment makes me proud of what we have started. Now, as we look to the future, we have a satellite branch starting up in Phoenix, under Al Kessell. As our group grows in size, may we always remember that we are ambassadors to the Highland Games. We must earn the respect given to us. And may we flourish as a network of partners, the brotherhood of The Black Sheep.

Yours in Strength, BULL
