About Dennis Posadas

Dennis Posadas is a technology columnist for the Philippine newspaper, BusinessWorld. He contributes articles regularly to UCLA AsiaMedia on Asian wireless, telecom and Internet topics, and has also written several news feature articles for United Press International (UPI).

Posadas worked as a chip equipment development engineer; technology and business analyst and venture capital scout for Intel Asia Pacific (based in Manila); and previously with Analog Devices. During his stint in the chip industry, he traveled on business extensively worldwide.

Posadas received his BS Electrical Engineering degree from the University of the Philippines in 1991, and was an Intel sponsored Fellow to the Advanced Study Program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Advanced Educational Services in 1999.

During his undergraduate years, he became Editor-in-Chief of the college newspaper, the Logscript.  While a Fellow at MIT, he became the editor-in-chief of the Fellows Newsletter, and was also enrolled at the same time in a policy course at nearby Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Posadas lives in Manila, Philippines with his wife Joy and three young daughters.

(for the media) Posadas says that:

  • “The Silicon Valley model of putting together in close geographic proximity research universities and research institutions, large numbers of scientists and engineers, angel and venture capital, requisite technology suppliers, and a culture of risk taking and excitement, is slowly being copied by Asian countries.”

  • “However, to a large extent, Asians who subscribe to the Silicon Valley model have had to contend with bureaucratic red tape in setting up their businesses for example, or business cultures averse to risk taking. The rewards came for those who were able to overcome these conservative and bureaucratic hurdles. For those who were not, they have been left behind.”

  • “While there is no question that Asian countries can copy Silicon Valley, Asia has many differences from the West. It is home to millions of Asians who live on less than $2/day. Technology startups can of course choose to service the needs of  Western countries. However, they should also consider catering their products and services to the needs of millions of poor Asians. At the end of the day, this business model can be just as profitable.”
