<< La Belle et la Bête >>

She was a kind-hearted girl, whom everyone could trust. Some did, and some used her kindness to their own advantage. Dairine Lauderdale was 15, and petite. She weighed only about 90 pounds and was only 4?9". She had long, sandy blond hair, and blue eyes that smiled when she did. All in all, Dairine was loved by many.

Lucifer Calahan, also known as Luke was another story. He was tall, muscular and incredibly handsome, with deep green eyes and unruly black hair. Luke?s disposition was nothing like his appearance. He never talked to anyone unless required. He didn?t ever take part in classroom discussions. Once in a while, he would do the required homework. From this, the teachers understood why Lucifer was placed in the top of his class. Because of this, many people did not understand Luke. So they hated him.

One day, these two very separate people were thrown together.

"Dairine Lauderdale & Lucifer Calahan will be researching," the teacher had to check his paper, "Vlad the Imapler and Elizabeth Bathory." Neither girl nor boy flinched. They sat at their new assigned table without objection.

"Hello." Dairine greeted the boy with a smile. He just glanced at her, then went back to scribbling holes in his notebook.

?If we?re going to be research partners, you could at least talk to me." Dairine insisted. She was a bit surprised when he spoke.

"Fine," Was all he said, but she was happy.

"Well, do you know anything about Vlad the Impaler or Elizabeth Ba-Bath-bathory?" Dairine had a little trouble with the last name, but she wasn?t embarrassed.

"They were both crazy." Lucifer said. Dairine laughed, and Lucifer looked at her. She was pretty, laughing. He did not say this. Instead, he said

"If we finish this as soon as we can, then we won?t have to hang around a lot." Lucifer said quietly. Dairine nodded. At least, thought she, that part of the challenge was out of the way. Somewhere inside her, Dairine knew there was another challenge that she would deal with when she got to it.

"I?m going to see if Luke wants company." Dairine told the crowd of girls sitting at the lunch table discussing fashion.

"Ha, like that?ll do any good." Adelaide laughed at this. Dairine ignored her. She picked up her lunch tray and walked over to Lucifer.

"Hello!" she greeted him. He looked up, right into her eyes, and nodded, acknowledging her.

"What are you doing?" she asked, nodding her head at the notebook he was scribbling in. Immediately he shut it.

"Nothing important." Luke said coldly. Dairine didn?t object instead, she offered him a French fry. He refused. She finished her lunch and brought her tray up. ?This Luke boy really is a puzzle? she thought, ?I hope there is a reason I have to figure him out.? She sat down.

"Why is it you?re like this?" she asked him.

"None of your business." Lucifer answered, getting up and leaving. Dairine wasn?t ruffled by the brush-off. Instead, she was even more intrigued by the boy who shared a name with the Devil himself.

He capped his pen, then closed his eyes & leant against the headboard of his bed. Sometimes writing took a lot of his energy. Luke sighed deeply, then opened his eyes again.

Somehow, that girl, Dairine, had wedged herself into his thoughts. She was beautiful, he admitted that. But she was trying to hard to care about everyone. She had asked him?why. She cared. She seemed like she did anyway. He shook this last thought out of his head and turned to the mirror.

"Show me Dairine." He whispered. The mirror fogged over. The fog swirled away to show the girl, Dairine, on her knees, washing the floor.

"You missed a spot." Another girl said, kicking the smaller one.

"Faster," A third, larger girl hollered. Dairine moved as fast as she could, but it was plain to see the other girls, her sisters, enjoyed teasing Dairine. Finally they left and Dairine stopped. She stared wistfully in the distance.

"No more." Luke waved his hand and the mirror became a mirror again.

?So that?s what her home life is like.? Luke thought, feeling sorry for the lovely petite girl. He took the cap off his pen and began to write again, his feelings flowing from his heart onto the paper.

As she scrubbed the floor clean, Dairine thought about Luke. He was very handsome, she knew. But something was beneath that thick shell he covered himself in. She knew now what her challenge was, and she accepted it whole-heartedly. If only Luke would follow along. That would be hard. She sighed, gave the floor another glance, and continued scrubbing. She hummed, lost in thought. She didn?t see the other person come in until he took her in his arms.

"Ah, my Dairine," He murmured.

"Fletcher," she groaned, pulling away. He was the only male that thought he was in love with her. She knew it was only a physical attraction.

"Dairine, darling, I have brought you a present." Fletcher kneeled on the ground and presented Dairine with a flower, a rose. She took it, and not to her surprise, she knew it was fake. He was incredibly cheap.

"Please leave." She said calmly, almost losing her patience.

"Until tomorrow, my love." Fletcher left. Dairine sighed. What a hypocrite. He professed his love so easily when they were alone. When his friends were near, that was another story. She sighed once again, then finished scrubbing the already clean floor.

Luke was almost afraid to approach Dairine now that he knew how her sisters treated her. ?But? thought Luke, ?being afraid never helped anything.? So he sat in his new assigned seat.

"Hello." Dairine smiled pleasantly at him. ?How could she be treated like that, yet still be happy?? He thought. He immediately felt guilty. It was none of his business.

"Have you got any info about the people?" Dairine asked. Luke nodded and pulled out a few pages he had printed off the Internet. The rest of the class they spent highlighting important information.

"What class do you have next?" Luke asked, sounding shy.

"French." Dairine told him. Luke wasn?t sure what to say next.

"I?ll walk you." He offered, even though his next class was at the opposite end of the building. They walked in silence until Dairine reached her classroom.

"See you." She said shyly.

"Okay, bye." He waved as she entered the room. He stood until the halls were empty. He decided to skip class today. He headed outside to the field. This was the last class of the day, s he sat on the grass and took out his notebook. Although he tried to write, his thoughts turned to Dairine. She was so different. She cared about him. That really bothered Luke. Why did she care? Was there something he had missed? Was this something she felt she had to do? He didn?t like that idea. For some reason, he felt Dairine and himself were meant to be together. Soul mates or something.

The bell rang, signalizing the end of the day. Luke got up, and walked home.

"Dairine." The simple word started her. She turned to see Luke there. He was holding a package. He placed it in her hands.

"For you." she looked at it suspiciously.

"Don?t? open it now." He said. She put the package in her locker.

"We have history." He said. She nodded. They walked to history, then took their seats.

"What kind of project are we going to do?" Dairine asked. Luke shrugged.

"Not a presentation." He said.

"Why not?

"Because I don?t want to talk in front of everyone." He said, blushing.

"Then we?ll do a presentation. Help you get over your fear." She concluded. Luke sighed heavily, but did not object. The rest of the class period was spent preparing their presentation.

Dairine opened the package Luke had given her. It contained a note and a mirror. She read the note first.

Dairine,

The mirror you hold in your hand is magical. You may use it to see anyone

Wherever they are. All you have to do is whisper the name of whoever you

Wish you see and "no more" when you are done. Use it well.

Lucifer

Dairine looked at the mirror again.

"Lucifer," she whispered to it. The scene formed. Luke was sitting at his desk. He had a notebook in front of him. He was chewing on his pen thoughtfully. Dairine smiled. He looked peaceful. In the scene, Luke took out his pen and began writing. ?What?? Dairine wondered. She was incredibly curious.

"Dairine! Get down here!"

"Yeah! You need to do laundry!" Her sisters shrieked.

"No more." Dairine whispered to the mirror. To her sisters she yelled, "I?ll be there in a second!" she hid the mirror in her drawer.

"Dairine!" Dawn hollered once Dairine had entered the kitchen,

"I need my dress washed for the concert tomorrow." Daphne said, throwing a pile of clothes at Dairine. Then Dawn & Daphne left in a fit of giggles. Dairine sighed, then shoved the clothes in the washer.

"Lazy," she commented under her breath.

"Thank you." She said softly to Luke.

"For what?" He asked, even though he knew.

"The mirror, its nice." She smiled up at him. And, for the first time, he smiled back. A real smile, one that lit up his whole face. ?I did it!? Dairine cheered herself.

"Walk you to history?" He asked. She nodded, and feeling brave, she reached for his hand. He took hers, and they walked, hand-in-hand to history. When they got there, Dairine expected him to let g of her hand, and return to his usual self. Instead, he let go of her hand and said,

"I have something I want to show you." With this, he took out his notebook, flipped a few pages, then stopped.

"Dairine, read this." He said softly. Curious, she obeyed. It was a poem called ?beauty?.

Her hair

Is the lightest auburn

Her eyes

Smile like sunshine

That?s outside

Inside

She cares

She has hope

She has compassion

She is mine

She is everyone?s

Yet she belongs

To no one

Her beauty

Is inside

And out.

Dairine looked up at the boy sitting next to her. He wrote this? No, it wasn?t possible. Then again, he was very secretive, and you never know.

"Luke, this is wonderful." Dairine whispered, her voice filled with awe. She didn?t dare wonder who it was about, if anyone.

"It?s you." He said.

"What is."

"The poem, it?s about you. You can keep it." He said softly. Dairine gasped.

"But?"

"Just take it. Please. Dairine, before I change my mind." Luke sounded irritated. She obeyed.

"I?have to go." Luke said, getting up. Dairine placed a hand on his arm, but he brushed her away.

"Why did you do that?" Luke asked himself, "no she?ll never talk to you ever again!" He chastised. His one rule was to never show you emotions. And what had he gone and done? First, he had fallen in love. Second, he had shown her his innermost feelings. That poem, had been his heart & soul on paper. Wen though he was at home, he did not feel he could escape her. After all, she had the mirror. What if she was watching now? He shrugged, then decided to go to bed early.

Dairine, at her house, held the mirror in her hands. Luke was lying on his bed, sleeping peacefully.

"No more." She whispered and set the mirror down. Dairine was surprised when she felt a few tears drip down.

"I love you." she whispered to the empty mirror. The tears came down in a whole deluge now. She did not try to wipe them away.

"What had she done? He had written her a poem, a wonderful poem. He truly cared! And she had just sat there like a dummy. The doorbell rang.

?Who could it be at this time of night?? she wondered. Daphne & Dawn were sleeping. Dairine wiped her tears away then answered the door. It was Lucifer. His hands were behind his back, his head down,

"Come in." Dairine said softly.

"I have to talk to you." He said, lifting is head to gaze into her blue eyes. They sat down. Luke took his hands from behind his back. He held a rose, a single, red, rose.

"I?m not very good with spoken words," Luke said, "So I?ll say this simply. This rose is a representation of my love for you." He placed the rose, real, in her hands. A single tear dropped on her cheek. Luke wiped it away with his hand.

"I love you too." She whispered. And with these words, Luke took her in his arms. Love makes everything all right.

Everyone lived happily ever after.
