NEWSPAPER CHAIR PROJECT

 

Goal:  To design and construct a safe, comfortable and durable chair using ONLY newspaper and masking tape.

 

Materials:          Newspaper

                             Masking Tape

                             Scales

                             Meter Stick

 

Competition instructions:

  1. Students will be divided into groups of two or three.
  2. Each group will design and construct a chair that will safely support the weight of one of the group members.
  3. Unlimited amounts of newspaper may be used.
  4. You are only allowed four (4) arm’s length of masking tape. This measure will be from the arm of the person whose weight the chair will support.
  5. The chair seat must be at least 45 centimeters from the floor.
  6. The chair must have leg supports, seat, and a back.

 

NOTE:  Chairs that do not meet these criteria will not be allowed to compete.

 

Scoring instructions:

  1. Each group will explain to the class the design and construction of their chair.
  2. Each chair and occupant will be weighed.  The lightest chair that holds the heaviest occupant will receive the greatest points.
  3. The chair must hold the occupant for at least 5 minutes without failure.
  4. Points will be awarded based on the following criteria:

30 points for overall durability and strength

30 points for chair to person ratio

10 points strength of joints

10 points for chair response when occupied

10 points for comfort of occupant

10 points for creative design

  1. Extra points will be awarded for chair arms, rockers, or other amenities.

 

NOTE:  The class will participate in evaluating each team’s grade.
