| What is the Choral Music Boosters Association? Every parent with a child in the RHS Choir program is a Booster member. We are an organization to support and assist the Choral Music program at RHS. Though there has been an informal group for years, we were formed as an association in 1999 to gain more "clout" with the "Big Boosters" of RHS. There is an officer board, elected on a yearly basis, to serve as President, Vice President 1 and 2, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian/Publicist. What does the Booster Association do, exactly? Our main function is to raise funds for the program and to assist wherever parents are needed. We travel with the groups, organize the annual Ramona Jamboree and other trips. Where do these funds go? In the past, we have purchased new drumheads, a new synthesizer keyboard and all the accessories, new costuming and sets for programs, and other items that the school's budget would not allow for. This year we are hoping to provide a small scholarship fund, to allow students with financial problems to participate in the program, as well as to replace other equipment that the dwindling school budget will not allow for. Why does the Choir Program charge for its concerts? If you attend a sporting event, you pay for admission. Same goes for theatre and musical events at RHS. The funds go into the general Choral Music Program fund in the school, to purchase new sheet music, maintain school owned instruments such as the pianos, replace aging electronic equipment, and many other necessities. Why are there two names for the same choir? When a group performs a show choir set for a competition, they are called by their show choir name (Melody Express or Encore). If they are singing music without movement or dance, they will be known by their concert name (Women's Ensemble or Chamber Singers). This is common in groups whose philosophy is a well-rounded musical education. Why do the choir dresses cost so much? Why do we all have to buy the same makeup and shoes? Choir is as much teamwork as many sports. Groups that have the same outfits feel more like a team and less like a group of individuals. Therefore, the dresses, makeup, shoes and tights must be the same all around for the girls, and the same outfits and shoes for the boys. Our show choir dresses are custom-made for each individual girl, to suit her body. They are made from a fabric that will be flashy on stage, and are lined. The concert dresses are purchased from a manufacturer, and are therefore less expensive, but because they are not custom-made, they must usually be altered to fit the girl. Though it seems fussy to tell each girl what brand and shade of makeup she must wear, we want to look uniform. There are many shades of red in lipstick, for instance, so it seemed best to say what shade and in what brand. Trial and error over the years has told our choreographers which brands hold up the best, too. An experienced mom has said that she watches for sales at such stores as SavOn, Rite Aid, and Kmart. We are trying to keep the dresses more than one year, to help defray the costs a little more. Boys' pants, shirts and vests are very reasonable if compared to the same type of street wear. |

What are Choir Points? Mr. Woods has developed a system called "Choir Points" for all the RHS Choirs. As a student participates in a fundraiser such as Krispy Kreme Donut sales, Cherrydale Farms, etc., the amount that a student earns is converted into a point value (i.e. $30 becomes 30 points). This amount of points is credited to the individual student, to assist in covering program costs such as costuming and travel. This increases the student's desire to assist in the fundraiser, and assists the parent with those ever-rising costs! What fundraisers count for Choir Points? Some will count, others will not. A student will not know until after the completion of a given fundraiser, whether or not it was a Choir Point Fundraiser. It will be announced in class. Why do we need fundraisers? What kinds do we do? In the ever-shrinking school budgets (particularly during the state budget crisis), schools always seem to cut funding for the creative and performing arts first, mostly because they are perceived as non-profit. The Boosters were created to assist in fundraising to help this shortfall. In one school year, our fundraising efforts provided new drumheads for the show choir drum set, a new electronic keyboard, and costuming for Encore. During the 2002-03 school year, we began a Scholarship Program to assist students with financial need in covering part of the costs of their outfits. Among Boosters' current and planned fundraisers are Krispy Kreme Donut sales, snack bars at Cabaret Nights and concerts, and Jamboree food booths. In addition, the Director often organizes special fundraisers such as Cherrydale Farms and candy sales. As mentioned earlier, concert and Cabaret admission is also a fundraiser to benefit the school music program. |
