Big Exclusive Richard O'Brien Interview

  • The Rocky Horror 2 script is done.  It's a first draft, but it's complete.  Richard O'Brien has been working with Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame) on the script.  Richard says he still wants to do it on stage.  Find out which characters will be returning.
  • Richard also said he is going to LA to talk with Lou Adler and Fox about - get this! - a TV movie remake (!) of the film.  The budget is to be $8 million - remember, the original film was done for $1M (though that was 26 years ago).
  • Excerpts from the upcoming Richard O'Brien interview.
  • "I'm an inspiration to anyone who has a half-baked idea and thinks it's going to go somewhere.  If it could happen to me it could happen to anyone."
  • How close is the Rocky Horror stage sequel you are currently writing to the original concept of "Rocky Horror Shows His Heels?   "It definitely goes back to 'Rocky Horror Shows His Heels.'  Janet's having a baby nine months later.  I'm asking myself, 'Do I have to bring back these characters?'  Yes, you do.  (Although) I'm not bringing Eddie back."
  • On the Broadway show:  "It was a real joy to go to New York.  They'd attacked it artistically in a completely new way, and so capably, and I kept getting surprised.  The first set change where the so-called cinema seats turn upside-down was terrifyingly good.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Actually it's more of a quick note.  As you've undoubtedly noticed, this newsletter is late this month.  It almost didn't get written this month because there is hardly any local news to pass on, as you'll see below.  That's the main reason that I've been doing the newsletter for the past 2+ years.  But, a few of you emailed me asking where it was, and there is quite a bit of national news, so here you have it.  I have something to ask all of you... If you know of anything newsworthy that's happening in your local scene, PLEASE pass it on to me.  I can only report what's reported to me.  Also, please tell everyone you know about this newsletter.  That way more people will know what's happening at your theatre, and who knows, they might even attend more often.

On a side note: I'm now the newest member of the Crazed Imaginations staff, so if you're a serious Rocky Horror fan and  like knowing what's happening in the World of Rocky Horror, I urge you to subscribe to Crazed Imaginations (the Rocky Horror magazine made BY THE FANS - FOR THE FANS) today.  For more information just click the banner ad above.

Rocky Horror Remake
from Sal Piro
Rocky Horror Picture Show Fan Club President

Dear ROCKY HORROR fans and friends...

The RHPS Fan Club has a big scoop for all its devoted followers.

In Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the birth of "Rocky" (when Richard was writing the original play)... Lou Adler and Twentieth Century Fox will shortly announce a huge broadcast television event for February 2003....

A remake of the Rocky Horror Picture show with an all-new celebrity cast.  What makes this more exciting is that the director of this project will be Stephen Elliot who directed the much beloved Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and the cult classic Welcome to Woop-Woop. Casting will be going underway soon and we will keep you informed of all updates.

Keep Time Warping..."

'Rocky,' Fox do time warp again
by Nellie Andreeva (The Hollywood Reporter)

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Talk about doing the time warp again -- Fox Broadcasting Co. will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" with "The Rocky Horror Birthday Show," a two-hour movie to be produced by Fox TV Studios.

Fox plans to air "Birthday" in February -- 30 years after Richard O'Brien first penned "Rocky Horror" as a play that ran in London. O'Brien is on board the TV project as a consultant and will contribute at least one new original song.

Lou Adler, who executive produced the 1975 feature with Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick, will executive produce "Birthday." Marius De Vries, who worked with Baz Luhrmann as musical director on "Moulin Rouge" and "Romeo + Juliet," is in negotiations to join the project.

The 2002 version of "Rocky Horror" will be faithful to O'Brien's original lyrics but with a new concept conceived by the project's director, Stephan Elliott ("The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert").

In the new version, Doctor Frank-N-Furter, who originally was an eccentric scientist living in a Transylvania castle on a quest to concoct the perfect man, will be a successful plastic surgeon who lives in a posh penthouse.

"The general theme we're going for is, in the year 2002, we live in a world where conspicuous consumption has become the lifestyle to be envied," said David Madden, executive vp at Fox TV Studios' made-for-TV unit, Fox TV Pictures, which oversees the project with Fox TV Pictures director Eric Poticha.

Madden said that doing some sort of a remake of "Rocky Horror," a prominent 20th Century Fox movie title, has been at the top of his wish list of projects since he joined Fox TV Pictures two years ago.

Adler has been approached numerous times to do a TV version, but he was hesitant because of his respect for the fans of the original movie -- a dedicated group that has made "Rocky Horror" one of the longest-running movies on the art house circuit. Two years ago, VH1 carried a 25th anniversary concert salute to "Rocky Horror," and the 2000 Broadway revival earned four Tony nominations.

But before he agreed to do a new 30th anniversary production, Adler floated the idea by the fans on "Rocky Horror's" official Web site, where it received an overwhelming thumbs-up.

"When we decided not to do it shot for shot (remake), the difficult part was how to do the same dialogue and the same music and yet not do the same picture," Adler said. "I think that Stephan Elliott came up with a brilliant concept and settings and images that allows us to use the same music and the same dialogue and yet we're making a different movie."

Production on the movie is scheduled to begin in September in Elliott's native Australia. Producers are confident that they will get well-known actors involved with the project, given the legion of fans as well as the roster of stars who have passed through the "Rocky Horror" milieu during the past three decades. Russell Crowe was part of the 1986-88 touring production of the show in Australia. Tracey Ullman had a role in the original London production toward the end of its run in the 1970s.

Madden noted that there's an added benefit for actors who are game for the part of the cross-dressing Frank-N-Furter.

"If somebody is looking to break their image, what better way is there than for a guy to put on a dress?" Madden said.

Fox Broadcasting Co. has a long history with "Rocky Horror." The network carried the TV premiere of the 1975 feature in 1993, and in 1994, the Fox Movie Channel cable service bowed on Halloween night with a run of the movie.

"I've been a fan of 'Rocky Horror' since I was a teenager, and I'm huge fan of Stephan Elliott," Fox entertainment president Gail Berman said. "Other networks may be able to do a musical, but only Fox could present 'Rocky Horror.' "

Rock Follies coming to DVD!

from the Crazed Imaginations Staff

The British show "Rock Follies" is coming to DVD.  Right now your asking yourself, why you should care.  Well,  Julie Covington, the very first RHS Janet is in it, as well as David Toguri, the choreographer from RHPS, Tim Curry makes an appearance in season 2, as well as Nell Campbell (as a blonde!).  The first season should be out as I write this, with season 2 scheduled for an August release.

At present it is only being released in UK format, but if you have a region free player (or know someone who does) you're in luck.

Bawdy Caste - Good News and Bad News
by: Richard Davidson
via: alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror

(ED: For all of you with friends in the Bay Area....)
First, the good news...

It's now less than a month until our fifth annual Reno show! This year's show will be held on July 14 and will be returning to Wingfield Park Amphetheatre. Last year, we had to move indoors due to rain and lightning, but we'll be right back out and under the stars again this year. The show starts around 8pm (think "drive-in time") and there will be a preshow, including a costume contest, before the film starts. The Caste hopes to see all of you there!

And now, the bad news...

We have gotten word that our current theatre, The Park Theatre, will be closing as of July 28. The Park, a wonderful single screen theatre, will be closing to make way for yet another office complex on the same property. Because of how the dates line up, we've been asked to have our next show, July 6, our last show at The Park. We are extremely sad to have to leave our adopted home and friends in the Menlo Park/Palo Alto area. If you want to read about what is happening, check out this story from the SF Examiner, which includes quotes from our Caste leader, Shannon Blake...

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/06/20/BA225370.DTL

We are currently on the new theatre hunt and actually have a couple solid leads. When it's time to make an announcement concerning our future home, I'll be sure to post it here. (ED: And I’ll be sure to pass it on.)

The Meat Beat

Please visit his site, which covers Meat Loaf AND Jim Steinman AND Rocky Horror:
http://www.mirrorofthesoul.com/

Seems as if one of Meat Loaf's movies he was in is having some problems actually getting to the theaters.  Meat Loaf was in a small independent film called Face To Face, starring Scott Baio.  The movie has played the usual film festivals and has done quite well in judging.  The problem is finding a distributor for the movie.  You can visit a fan site for the film and even sign an online petition to get this film out in theaters!  I believe in this project so much, that if you do not have access to a computer, send in your comments to the MLUKFC snail mail address and I will have someone send me your results so I can post them on the petition for you!!!

Face To Face Fansite:  http://www.geocities.com/face2facefilm/

On some television news, there seems to be no official word (yes or no) as to whether Meat Loaf will/or will not be on the cast of the new show on Fox Broadcasting Network's Fall Lineup called John Doe, which is about a man who suffers from extreme amnesia. I do not know about this show airing anywhere else in the world besides America, but I have seen commercials for the show, and so far no Meat Loaf in any of them.

John Doe Website:  http://www.fox.com/schedule/2002/johndoe.htm

The Ultimate Albums show about Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman's Bat Out Of Hell aired on VH1 in America. The people at VH1.com have set up a marvelous site dedicated to the show, including two exclusive interviews, one with Meat and one with Jim, about the making of the album. You can listen to clips of every song off of the album, vote for your favorite song from the album, and also post your thoughts and opinions about Meat Loaf and the album on the message board they have set up.

A Slice of Meat Loaf:
Rocker in a chatty mood during Casino Rama rehearsals

Dug up by Q   of the Richard O'Brien Crusade for Crazed Imaginations
By Jane Stevenson Toronto Sun

RAMA, Ont. -- He took the words right out of my mouth. But it wasn't while he was kissing me.
Meat Loaf, the iconic rocker and sometime actor who has sold 50 million albums and appeared in 42 films, was downright chatty during a Canadian newspaper exclusive with The Sun yesterday afternoon between breaks in rehearsals for his tour which launches at Casino Rama tonight.
Tanned and dressed in a black Hawaiian shirt, black sweat pants and black sneakers, the Dallas-born performer greeted me with a friendly "How are you, dear?" as we settled in for a 20-minute chat in the green room backstage at the casino's entertainment centre.
Meat Loaf, 54, said he didn't know exactly how he ended up in the Toronto area to rehearse, but he was glad he did.
"I always want someplace to rehearse before we put up the show," he said.  "Like we always have some venue where we can hang the lights and test everything and get it set up and this was here and available and the casino let us have it, so what the heck.
"It really is great here," he continued.  "It's really kind of first class.  Dressing rooms are great. Stage is great.  People are nice.  Food in the restaurant was pretty good.  And the hostess was a standup comedian."
Meat Loaf explained that he only arrived here on Monday night after playing in a golf tournament.  Thus, his tan.
"I don't consider this a tour. I consider this an outing," he said, chewing on a candy.  "A tour is a hundred shows or more.  Anything less than 100 shows is an outing.  It's like leaving home for the weekend."
So what can fans expect during this "outing" then, which is being billed as "Meat Loaf and Friends Just Having Fun For The Summer Tour?"  It wraps up on July 21 in the U.S. midwest before he heads over to England for shows.
Meat Loaf said he appears after two short sets by bassist Kasim Sulton (on acoustic guitar) and backup singer Patti Russo.
"And then we all come out," he said.  "And I do like an hour and fifteen minutes, and then we all sit around the piano like in your kitchen."
The Sun was later invited to watch a bit of the rehearsals as Meat Loaf and his seven-piece band -- including his 27-year-old daughter Pearl on backup vocals -- ran through the new song Tear Me Down and the older chestnut I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That).
Meat Loaf hoped to have a new duet with Pearl called Man Of Steel ready to go later in the road trip.
"This is like six, seven years, she's gone (out)," he said of her being on the road with him.  "At first, when she was in high school, she went out in the summertime and sang and then I put her back in school, and then she's just been doing it whenever I go out.  She's like part of the band."
Meat Loaf's next album, Testify, which he's currently working on with 30-year-old Toronto- born, L.A.-based producer Peter Mokran (Prince, NSYNC, Christina Aguilera), won't be in stores for another eight months.  He said he's recorded ten songs, has two more to go and will follow its release with a 150-date, year-long tour.
"It's really a good album," said Meat Loaf.  "It sounds like me only it's like a little more updated.  People have gone, 'Oh, that's a different kind of rhythm for you,' so there you go.  That's the only way I can describe it.  There are two or three things that you wouldn't have necessarily heard me do before but they sound like me and they feel like me."
Interestingly though, Meat Loaf -- who is looking forward to making at least two more movies in August and September -- described the recording process as torturous.
"In the studio, that's work.  That's like having the Spanish Inquisition.  Singing in the studio is torture.  I mean just absolute torture to me.  I might has well get things shoved under my fingernails.  It hurts, it's painful, I don't want to be there any longer than I have to.  I love film.  I could sit on a movie set forever."

BBC likes the idea of Buffy star playing Doctor Who
Scoop by Shawn McHorse

http://www.orange-today.co.uk/entertainment/story/sm_620011.html?menu=

The BBC says it likes the idea of Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Anthony Stewart Head playing Doctor Who.
Buffy producer David Fury claims he is to work as an adviser on a new series of the classic sci-fi show.  But the BBC had denied it is currently making any such plans.  However, the BBC's own website reports the channel's cult team quite likes the idea of Head as the Doctor.  According to the Daily Express, the BBC is planning a new series of Doctor Who to be shown next year, to celebrate the show's 40th anniversary.

Fury said: "They want to do what we do on Buffy, produce 22 episodes a year and sell them internationally.  I'm helping to take Doctor Who into a new universe."

Richard Spotted Arriving At Work at Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Richard Spotted Arriving At Work

The car is still flying, and Richard O'Brien is still doing his best to maintain the Child Catcher's reputation for giving children over the world nightmares. He doesn't actually WANT to haunt their dreams, he's said... but he doesn't dislike the idea of coming darned close.  Nevertheless, during one entrance, an audience member laughed, and O'Brien defiantly remarked- "I'm not the comedy - I'm the scary guy!!!!"
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: http://www.chittythemusical.co.uk

Richard is due to continue his role through September.  Once free of the contractual obligations of appearing on the boards, Richard will be appearing/organizing a number of charity events.  The first, a UNICEF charity ball, is set for September 25, 2002.  Among the other notables scheduled to appear include fellow RHPSer Christopher Biggins.
UNICEF gala events page: http://www.unicef.org.uk/gettinginvolved/gala/

The event, a yearly gala which takes a theme, will this year be in the guise of "Cabaret".  It will be held at the Park Lane Hotel, Piccadilly- tickets are 125 pounds apiece.  "Richard O'Brien's Transfandango", a gala event including a "High heels at high noon" race- prizes, entertainment and ball is scheduled for September 28th.  Says Richard of the event:

"Dearhearts and Trans and Gentle people - September the 28th has been put aside as a fund raising day for Manchester Childrens Hospital (The Great Ormond Street of the North).  To this end we are going to have ourselves a ball.  In fact a Trans-Fandango.  An evening of Frock and Roll.  In the morning there will be a Drag Race on heels not wheels.  In the evening we will gather at Manchester's beautiful 'Palace Hotel' for food, fun and fantasy.  If you ever needed an excuse to frock-up, this is it.  Among other things there will be prizes, surprizes, disguizes, apetizers, vocalizers, hamonizers, rhapsodizers and mesmerizers."

What else is there to say?  And for 60 pounds a pop, it doesn't sound like a bad way to spend an evening.  For more info, visit the website: http://www.wayout-publishing.com/transfandango.htm

And speaking of game show hosts... (heh) Barry Humphries was recently spotted at a funeral for "Goon Squad" member Spike Milligan.  Talks are also afoot with BBC1 to re-instate Dame Edna.  The show would purport to feature half hour excerpts from previous broadcasts- to insinuate she'd never BEEN off the air, but the BBC couldn't get her. http://www.dailytelegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml

Thanks to Christine Zachman for the link, who adds:
"Keep an eye out for the commercials on WB, they are currently airing them to promote the new fall shows. We haven't seen any listed yet, but be sure to watch for talk show appearances, I'm sure Tim will be "doing the rounds" to promote "Family Affair."

WB's Family Affair review
By John Levesque
Seattle Post-Intelligencer Television Critic

The oddly familiar.  Remember "Family Affair," the sticky-sweet '60s comedy about a rich bachelor who becomes the reluctant guardian of his nephew and two nieces?  It's back.  And this time Cissy, Jody and Buffy aren't that adorable.  But Tim Curry may make us forget all that.  His take on the veddy British butler, Mr. French, is an unusual treat in the mindless realm of sitcom fluff.

Sarandon, Scorsese Get Star Power
By Mark Armstrong (E! Online)

From Weezie to Chrissy and Beau to Bobby, the latest list of Hollywood Walk of Fame honorees is...well, star-studded.

Director Martin Scorsese, Susan Sarandon , Robert Duvall, Beau Bridges, Kermit the Frog, former Jeffersons star Isabel Sanford and former Three's Company ditzy blonde Suzanne Somers are among the celebs on the 2003 list of Hollywood Walk of Fame recipients, announced Friday by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce ( news - web sites).

In all, 22 names made the list, including posthumous honors for late Saturday Night Live great Gilda Radner and legendary Broadway composer Richard Rodgers.

The list is just the latest batch in Hollywood's annual star handout game, in which celebrities pay for the honor of having their name placed on Hollywood Boulevard--a honor handed to more than 2,100 celebs since 1958.

About 200 nominations are submitted every year, and honorees must pay (or have someone else pay) a $15,000 fee to be eligible for the much-sought-after pink terrazzo and bronze-engraved stars.

"The nomination has to be approved by the committee, which consists of five people," Johnny Grant, chairman of the Walk of Fame Selection Committee and honorary mayor of Hollywood, explained to E! Online in 1998. "We do about 18 a year and select a certain number of nominees from each category," which includes TV, film, recording, radio and live performance.

Herewith, a complete list of the class of 2003:
    * Movies: Kevin Bacon, Robert Duvall, Susan Sarandon, Martin Scorsese
    * Television: Beau Bridges, Drew Carey, Kermit the Frog, KTLA-TV's Larry McCormick,
The Osmond Family, Isabel Sanford, Suzanne Somers
    * Recording: Michael Bolton, Etta James, Carole King, Israel Lopez "Cachao," Earl Scruggs
    * Live Theater/Live Performance: Betty Garrett, Doris Roberts, Carmen Zapata
    * Radio: Gil Stratton
    * Posthumous: Gilda Radner, Richard Rodgers

“Stepmom” Voted Favorite Mom Movie in Blockbuster Survey

DALLAS, May 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Move over Aurora Greenway, times are changing. A Mother's Day survey by Blockbuster that asked respondents to pick their favorite 'mom' movie surprisingly revealed that unconventional "mom" characters beat out more traditional performances, hands down.
Survey-winner "Stepmom," a story about a divorced mother, her children and her children's contentious relationship with their father's girlfriend, starring Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon, was by far the No. 1 choice with 56 percent of the votes.
Following in a distant second was the dark Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal comedy "Throw Mamma from the Train" with 17 percent of the votes. Previous survey winner "Terms of Endearment" with Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger, came in third with 12 percent.
What movie are you most likely to watch with your mother?
                  Stepmom (1998)                                           56%

LOCAL NEWS - TACOMA

Scene Update
by ~Labyrinth~

Not much is happing here in Tacoma except a bunch of line up changes and birthdays.  We haven't had a normal show in over a month.  Things should get back to normal after our "Christmas in July" show on the 13th.

Other than that I would like to say Happy Birthday to Tiffy, David, and Gwen.  Also Christy we are glad you're feeling better.

And please check our yahoo club for updates and social events outside of Rocky...

LOCAL NEWS - SEATTLE

Catsuit Kelly Leaving
by Veronica Lavenz

Kelly has been a fixture in the NW RHPS scene for longer than she'd probably like to remember.  She has been the driving force of the VTC for years.  In fact, she was integral in resurrecting the Seattle cast under that name.  She has been our webmaster, cast historian, Head Trannie, Frank, facilitator, and kickass costumer.  But now she's moving on to be with her sweetheart (and her own personal Rocky) in California.  She'll still go to Rocky, but plans on being much more in the background.  Who can blame her?  She's served her time well and will be missed by performers and audience alike.  Parting words from her bio page: "I revel in the joy of knowing that the makers of hairspray and makeup love me only for my money.  The best things in life are shiny.  TRANNIES ROCK!"
