So to meet him in the flesh, to watch him stand perfectly still
and politely answer questions, to see the twinkle in his large eyes and
hear that famous British baritone is a sensorially splendid experience. The show is an updated version of that well-regarded chestnut, and it is safe for the whole family. Curry, bless him, plays French with humorous but controlled exasperation. Those tuning in to see whether Curry's French might be an older, strait-laced version of the sharp-tongued Furter may be disappointed. This new Family Affair closely resembles the old. The show's tone, title sequences and music are virtual replicas, even though the show is set in the present. To generations unfamiliar with the original, and for those who
may have forgotten, the show is about a swinging bachelor, Bill Davis,
a handsome, successful engineer whose domestic needs are tended to by a very
English gentleman's gentleman, Giles French. Their lives are suddenly changed
by the arrival of three children -- 6-year-old twins and their 14-year-old
sister, the children of Davis' brother and sister-in-law, who have died.
How this new family adjusts provides the show its modus operandi. Gary Cole, who has developed a knack for resurrecting television
icons (he was Mike Brady in two well-received Brady Bunch movies), plays
the role the late Brian Keith made famous in the original. Caitlin Wachs
portrays Sissy (Kathy Garver played the original teen, who spelled her name
Cissy). Jimmy "Jax" Pinchak and Sasha Pieterse are Jody and Buffy, parts
played by Johnnie Whitaker and the late Anissa Jones. The mischievous twins and the ready-to-date Sissy are the show's
plot shakers. But its humor rests squarely on the shoulders of French. Curry is quite familiar with American television, not only because
he's called the United States home for a quarter century, but also because
he's done an abundance of American television work. He recently filmed
a pilot for the WB that was not picked up. He and Annie Potts starred in
an unsuccessful comedy called Over the Top, and he has guest-starred
on numerous shows, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Where in
the World is Carmen Sandiego to Wiseguy. Still, "I was sort of a little iffy about going back to television.
But Gavin (executive producer Gavin Palone) explained why doing Family
Affair was a good idea. He said, 'It's a fairy tale, you idiot.' And
a light came on in my head. I went home, read the script aloud and laughed.
I mean, I thought it was funny. And I don't have to pack and go to Romania
and play some Cinemascope villain. "One of the things that really drew me to it is that he's essentially
a nice guy. He's kind of a buttoned-up sweetheart. And I love the comedy
of humiliation. I really love the situation of a guy who has these grim
responsibilities thrust upon him and has no clue how to deal with them. "And to be funny, or try to be funny, on a regular basis was very
appealing to me."
The original Family Affair was on CBS until 1971, well before
Curry made it to this side of the pond."I was blissfully unaware of (the original show) because they didn't show it in England," said Curry, elegantly dressed in a black suit and shirt. "So I didn't bring any baggage to it, and I really had no idea until I was shooting it what a huge hit it had been and how beloved it was. I don't think it would have stopped me from taking it on, because it's a damn good part. But I'm, you know, sensitive to the potential comparison." Unlike his character on Family Affair, the never-married
Curry, 56, gets on quite well with children. "Well, children," he said, eyes twinkling, lip curling, grin forming.
"I like them with black bean sauce." Actually, he said, his sister has children. "I'm very close to
my nieces and spoil them rotten." Curry knows funny. He's been practicing since he was a child. "I was a pretty relentless clown as a kid. I mean, my dad died
when I was 12, and in an imaginative life, humor seemed like a pretty
good option." He did it properly in the 1975 film that made him a cult star.
But The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which for years played at midnight
in movie theaters across the country (and still does in some places) is
not a topic Curry likes to revisit. "Well, it would be pretty dumb not to distance myself," he said.
"It was 25 years ago, give me a freaking break." But audiences still celebrate it. "Well, I do, too," he said. "I'm terribly proud of it. I should
have the luck to be the star of a movie that's run for 25 years and that
people are still inspired by, that kids love, that give them alternative
patterns of sexuality that make them feel good about themselves. I love
all of that. "(But) I don't really want to answer another question about the
meaning of Frank N. Furter for the rest of my life. I think I did it, and
enough already." A safer topic: gardening. "Right now, I'm building my back garden. I'm building two terraces,
a fireplace and a pool. And a koi pond, because I love fish. I really
do like to get my hands dirty. "I'm not a draftsman, I'm not a painter, although I try a bit.
But you can paint with flowers and you can sculpt with plants, and you
can make people very happy. In a planet that's increasingly covered by yards
and yards of concrete, which you know is going to be trashed in a few years,
any piece of land or any terra-cotta pot that you can make beautiful seems
to me a valuable thing to do." Is gardening a release from work? He grinned. "There have been times when making a garden was truly
the most creative thing I was doing in Hollywood." One last question: How did his dream of being an actor compare
to what has happened? "It's beyond my wildest dreams. I hoped I would do a play in the West End. I hoped I would do a movie. I dreamed I would do an American movie. I never dreamed I would have ... I really never call it a `career' because it implies a certain amount of forethought, and I can't pretend there's been any. But I never thought I'd have a ride like this. I've been incredibly lucky. I've worked very hard. I've had a wonderful life. And I know it." |

| For all those interested, I was magazine surfing
at work today and came across something you may be interested in. The July
Harpers & Queen, a Brit magazine with Talisa Soto on the cover, has an
article on the Royal Court Theatre in London. There is a picture with Richard
alongside other past theater luminaries. Its to be found at all Borders,
B&N, and newstands that have import mags. |
| I got the following message from Charmaine Owen at
the Wallness Children's Charity. This year, Richard O'Brien is proposing a "Tranny Fandango" ball and a rather special spoon-and-egg race (including prizes for best-dressed contestants and best-dressed egg). Like last year, the charity events will be in Manchester and benefit the Wallness charity. However, this year they are in September, so please mark your calendars. You can find details at the website listed below. I will do what I can to let as many people know about this event as possible. So I will apologize in advance if you see this message twice. Please do what you can to spread the word. Please note: the egg race is limited to the first 30 contestants and you must wear at least 4 inch heels. Should be interesting!
I must let you know that Richard is coming to Manchester again for his yearly fundraiser for the charity. This time he is going off into uncharted territory here in the U.K. and holding a 'High Heels @ High Noon' Drag Race in Manchester City Centre midday Saturday 28th September followed by a Transvestite, transsexual ball in the Palace Hotel, Manchester in the evening. The event is to cater for everyone, mainly transsexuals but to include all sections of the community, straight, bi, rocky horror. He is trying to cross the great divide and bring everyone together. |
Susan Sarandon’s new film, Igby Goes Down, will be released in August of
2002. Premise: A teen rebel (Kieran Culkin) hits the road.
Also co-starring Jeff Goldblum, Claire Danes and Ryan Phillippe. (Source:
Yahoo! News)The Banger Sisters, starring Susan Sarandon and Goldie Hawn, is slated for a September 20th, 2002 release. You can see a trailer of the movie here: http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/b/bangersisters.php The Banger Sisters tells the story of two old friends, both former groupies. One friend, now a punked-out waitress, is only too happy to wax nostalgic about the good old days, while the other, a prominent socialite, is desperate to hide her past. Susan has said, “I'll play the one who has gotten on with her life. Goldie will be the one mentally stuck in the past". (Source: http://www.chrisbaker.co.uk/ ) Susan Sarandon, Leelee Sobieski and Robin Tunney will star in the indie feature A Whale in Montana for director George Hickenlooper. The project begins shooting on 29th April on the East Coast, with Donald Sutherland, David Strathairn and Rory Cochrane also starring. Written by Paul Donohoe, the project is described as a cross between "Ghost" and "In the Bedroom." It follows a widowed doctor (Sarandon) with a 7-year-old daughter working in a small town. The doctor must come to terms with her past, present and future when her child's best friend, a 7-year-old boy from an abusive family, begins having visions of her dead husband. Andrew Pfeffer and Donald Zuckerman are producing the project, which is budgeted at less than $10 million. (Source: http://www.chrisbaker.co.uk/ ) Goodbye Hello is the name of another upcoming Susan film, formerly titled “Baby’s In Black”. It is based on the life of Brad Silberling’s fiancée, 21-year-old actress Rebecca Shaeffer, who was gunned down by a crazed fan in 1989. [Reporter’s note: I’m guessing, from the titles and from the true story it is based on, that there is some sort of Beatles connection in this film.] The premise is that a man is grieving over the death of his fiancée, who was killed in a restaurant where she was waiting tables. The man, who lives with his mother (Susan Sarandon) and father, begins to fall for a woman who works in a bar owned by her missing boyfriend. The word is that Susan will earn at least $7m for her part is the film, making it her highest payer to date. Filming wrapped in late July 2001. (Source: http://www.chrisbaker.co.uk/ ) |

Coen Bros. Tune Up for Musical
Tue Jul 23, 7:10 PM ET
By Josh Grossberg Los Angeles (YahooNews) - James Gandolfini a song-and-dance man? O brother, art thou kidding me? Absolutely not. We're talking the Coen brothers here. Apparently, O Brother, Where Art Thou? was only a prelude for the ever-quirky tandem. Now, according to Daily Variety, director Joel and writer-producer Ethan Coen are tuning up for an encore to their Oscar- nominated (and Grammy-winning) folksy Depression-era musical odyssey and are eyeing the oversized godfather of The Sopranos to strut his stuff in the lead role. The duo have reportedly agreed to produce and direct Romance and Cigarettes, a new musical being written by one of their favorite actors, John Turturro. (Aside from O Brother, Turturro starred in the Coens' Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski and Miller's Crossing.) The filmmakers are also hoping to enlist such musical veterans as Susan Sarandon (who shot to fame in The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Christopher Walken (who costarred in Pennies from Heaven and showed off his mean dance moves in the Fatboy Slim video "Weapon of Choice"). Other actors being courted for roles include Julia Stiles, Steve Buscemi and Gandolfini's Sopranos sibling (and John Turturro's real-life cousin) Aida Turturro. Turturro is also trying to persuade his Mr. Deeds costar Adam Sandler to do a cameo in the movie. (Not, we pray, as Opera Man.) The Coens will begin work on Romance once they put the wraps on Intolerable Cruelty, a black comedy starring Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones that just began production. With Romance in the pipeline, the renaissance of the Hollywood musical is in full bloom. In addition to the recent O Brother, Moulin Rouge, Dancer in the Dark and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Miramax has huge expectations for the Christmas release of its big-screen version of Bob Fosse's Chicago, starring Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger . |

| Allentown PA - July 21, 2002 Well,
here is a cute little something... Allentown had a number of guest performers last night: Art Laurie from Boston (who couldn't make it, we missed ya Art), Linda, Sarah, Erica and Nick from Transylvanian Nipple Productions, etc. I thought I would drive on down and watch the show. I got there a wee bit early, and met up with the Eddie. He brought me into the theater 'cause I had to use the men's room. Now, mind you, when I went into the bathroom everything was fine, business as usual. I do my business, come out... and find a lobby filled with smoke, ushers escorting people from all the theaters, and the stink of fire in my nose. "Bill, what the hell did you do in there?!?" asked the Eddie with a smile. "Um, nothin'." I say. "What's going on?" "Oh, there's a fire, everyone has to leave the building right away. I'll be right back," he says. "Where the hell are YOU going?" I asked, cause I wanted to get the hell out of there right away. "Oh, I gotta use the bathroom," he says, and walks off into the smoke to pee. SHEESH. So, there was a fire, the show was canceled for that night, and we had a parking lot filled with Rocky Horror people... what to do? PUT ON A F**KING SHOW, WHAT ELSE? [:)] So that's what they did! In between two rows of cars, the soundtrack blasting from the rear speakers of one car, the Allentown cast put on a show. Let it never be said that RH people aren't some of the most loyal fans that any genre has ever had! Everyone had a lot of fun, especially the fire trucks that got lots of cheers, and the mall security people! At first I thought they would kick us out, but instead they parked and got out and clapped and cheered us on. It was pretty cool, until finally a town cop arrived and gave us the ol' move-along. This was one of the funnest shows I've ever seen, and I wanted to give a public tip o' th' hat to the Allentown people and guests for adhering to the old saying "The show must go on!" |
| I heave a sigh of relief - June is over, and it
was a fun-filled explosion of Rocky activities in Portland: We marched
with the Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans pride parade, then, shortly after, had the
fortune to be included in Peacock In The Park, an annual fund raising benefit
for a scholarship to be handed out to Portland area students who are Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans,
or have parents that are Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans. We also had our almost-approaching-annual
18 and over night, where the adults kick out the underagers and run naked
through the theatre! The Theme was Mardi Gras, and there were beads a-plenty
for all! The 31st Clinton Street Cabaret had a beautiful toast out, and ended it's existence, then, in the tradition of the Clinton Street Cabaret (and the Phoenix), we immediately created the 32nd Cabaret. Some new faces, some old, but still the same movie! In upcoming Clinton Street Cabaret News, the 32nd Clinton Street Cabaret is now rehearsing, and will be starting our season with a bang on the 3rd of August! Unfortunately, opening night (previously scheduled as the 20th of July) had to be pushed back, but now we will be ready to get back into the swing of things, so come over to Portland, and see us some Saturday, and be sure to check out our website: www.rockypdx.org . |
| Things in Tacoma are rocking... We just had
our Christmas in July show and all I can say is, what a blast. From
the tacky decorations in the theater, including a Christmas tree, to the
festive cast costuming. There was peppermints to be had by all. We finally decided our next theme show is going to be a true parter role reversal. We have done this here and there but never fully. It should be interesting... Led as Columbia, James as lips, Tiffy as Eddy.. Like the rest of our fans I am looking forward to seeing what will happen. Other than that we have started a new tradition. Dressing up the virgins and Rocky scavenger hunt. If you want to know more you will just have to show up for the fun. Love from the mouse, ~Labyrinth~ |
| Our Annual Rocky Horror Independence Day Bondage
Show went over well as usual. We had fabulous attendance. We
made programs for the first time in forever. We only had 150, but just
over 200 people came to the show. This next month is exciting because we will have two shows instead of just one. There will be our usual show on the 3rd and a bonus show on the 17th. A lot of new projects have been started. The Trannies have been working on replacing their props. We've all started thinking of fund raising ideas to get things that will improve the show in general. Also, the theatre has graciously allowed us to use the old box office as a display. It's an exciting time to do RHPS in Seattle. |
The Admiral Theatre was built in 1942, but what many people don’t realize
is that it got its start in 1919. The lobby used to be a movie theatre called
the Portola. So, the theatre has been a mainstay of the Admiral neighborhood
and of West Seattle for nearly 80 years. Those who were around eight years ago when the theatre was closed, and can remember what the Admiral district was like then compared to now, know the night-and-day difference the theatre has made. The Admiral Theatre has been a catalyst for bringing the whole area alive. Part of the history of this theatre is the people who made its preservation possible. When the theatre closed in 1989, it took literally thousands of people signing petitions, buying buttons, and attending endless meetings. It took local and state office-holders. It took a very user-friendly landmarks process. It took private investors who were willing to take a risk. Not just our generation, but many, many future generations, because of the preservation of the Admiral Theatre, will have the opportunity and the time to experience and enjoy, in the words of one of the best movie quotes, "the stuff that dreams are made of."
From the Puget Sound
Theatre Organ Society
pageAfter the silent movie era, (famous theatre architect Benjamin Marcus) Priteca designed several Art Deco houses including the 1942 nautical-theme Admiral Theatre on California Avenue SW in West Seattle. The Admiral was built on the site of the old Portola Theatre. This photo shows the front of the Admiral Theater in 1946. Moviegoers could see the main feature, "My Gal Sal," along with a newsreel on atomic power. The atomic bomb had ended World War II the year before. |
