Research Topic Selection

Choose from the following approved topics for your Research Alert Webpage which is due near the end of the semester. For a more detailed explanation of each of the approved topics, see your syllabus.

Propose your chosen focus to the instructor via email. Be sure to include the following information.

 Name: Rhonda Wyrick

What is your broad topic? (Choose your topic and delete the rest)

o Euphemisms/Doublespeak: What are euphemisms and why do we use these so called polite expressions? What categories of euphemisms exist? What is doublespeak? How have the government and industry used doublespeak?

Narrow your focus from the broad topics required in the syllabus: I want to research how local/regional euphemisms/doublespeak affect the L2 learner. Does the use of euphemisms make L2 acquisition more difficult? How can will bridge L1 euphemisms to the L2 euphemisms?

Why did you choose this topic to research? As a 4th grade teacher I am always encountering L2 learners with difficulties with everyday euphemisms. Some are not directly L2 learners, but are children of L2 learners.

What do you hope to discover in your research? Ways that I can bridge L1 euphemisms to L2.

How will this research impact your current/future teaching/administrative assignment? I will have a plan in teaching L2 learners local euphemisms and learn how to explain L2 euphemisms better.

Your topic will either be approved or you will be asked to narrow the focus, reconsider, etc. Once you receive instructor approval, then post your topic in the Discussions area with the instructor approval as part of your posting.

Instructor Approval:

Yes

Instructor comments: Good focus, but look at the definition/examples of euphemisms. You may be really thinking about idiomatic expressions. Euphemisms are idiomatic but for different purposes.
