JAMES RATLIFF 1882-1955 James (Jim) Ratliff, 73, died suddenly of a heart attack near his home at Van Lear Tuesday (Oct.18 1955) morning. The son of the late Bud and Lou Collins Ratliff, he was born in Johnson County July 10, 1882. He had been a resident of Van Lear for 30 years. He was a retired miner and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Taylor Ratliff, one son, Marvin Ratliff, Raleigh, N. Carolina, four daughters, Mrs. Delmar Wells, city, Mrs. Virgil Preston, Fairborn, Ohio, Mrs. Estill Thacker and Mrs. Solomon Stambaugh, both of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Other survivors include eight brothers, Jess, Press, Earl, Dennie, Virgil, Russell, Irvin and Dick Ratliff, and three sisters, Sissie Ratliff, Mrs. Emma VanHoose, and Mrs. Jessie VanHoose. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Claude Preston officiating.
