Extended Breastfeeding of TWINS Breastfeeding Triplets by Jeanette Niebler Believe it or not, it is possible to breastfeed triplets... begins this article by a mohter who did it! Nursing Through Pregnancy I know of mothers who have breastfed three consecutive siblings together, as well as several who have nursed through a twin pregnancy and then tandem nursed the twins with the older sibling. Why Nurse Toddlers (about half way down the page) I AM NURSING MY TWO DAUGHTERS AGED TWO YEARS and two months(twins). I did not want to breastfeed. I have numerous physical hang-ups about my body and was grossed out by the idea of nursing. But I had to give breastfeeding a try because I knew it is best for the baby's health. I promised myself that if I did not like it, I would stop and nobody would think of me as a bad mother. Everyone would just assume that it was too difficult to nurse twins. Well, once I began breastfeeding, thankfully with no problems to speak of, I didn't want to stop. It wasn't that I loved it from the start, that came later, but I felt pride at continuing to be the sole source of nourishment for my daughters. I thought I might have to resort to formula at some point when when the girls were four months old and I returned to school four days a week to finish my dissertation. I was worried again that our breastfeeding relationship would be disrupted when a blizzard prolonged a solo job-hunting trip from four days to six days and my supply appeared to plummet. At eighteen months I was worn out by our frequent simultaneous nursing sessions. But at every challenge, I could think of many reasons I wanted to continue nursing and no reason to stop. I'm not doing this to prove anything, although I think my experience does prove that breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding are possible with twins, but because it works and continues to work for our family. My daughters are now two years and two months old. I believe breastfeeding has helped my daughters stay healthy despite the variety of viruses that have swept through daycare. I hope it has lowered my risk of breast cancer, which is a concern in my family. I feel good about giving my daughters the best food, what nature intended, far superior to what money can buy. I feel connected to all the women and even all the mammals who have nourished their young as I do. And I feel a very sweet and deep joy when my daughters come to me for "Mommy juice" (their term). Sometimes they giggle and sometimes they snuggle up to me and relax. Nursing is always a special and rewarding time.--Sara S, U.S.A. NATURAL MOTHERING Ecological Breastfeeding is a type of nursing the respects and follows the natural order. In fact, we call it Natural Mothering for that reason. The Bible and Breastfeeding From the site: Biblical Passages that Refer to the Nursing Relationship The Bible uses nursing as a metaphor for God's love, mercy and provident care. SUPPORT Association of Breastfeeding Mothers TODDLERS Nursing Beyond 1 year.....10 reasons to just DO IT!! Extended Breastfeeding and the Law LLL Article very eye opening! Nursing a toddler TWINS! Why Mothers NurseTheir Children into Toddlerhood Why Nurse Toddlers? I HAVE BEEN NURSING CONSTANTLY FOR THE LAST five years. My oldest son just self-weaned at 4.8 years old, my three year old son is still nursing and I also have a five month old baby girl nursing. For a few months I did tandem nurse all three of them! This was really very special, I am glad I was able to do it. I won't push my kids into weaning if they are not ready for it. Even though my oldest nursling at four years old only nursed once every two or three days, it still was extremely important to him. It was no big deal to me to allow him to continue. Then the weaning was really easy, he just told me that he was going to nurse one more time, and then all the breast was for the baby. I think the extended breastfeeding gave him some extra security. Also I think the tandem nursing helped him to adjust to the arrival of his new siblings more easily (and for me, when I nursed both of them, that was often the only time of the day that I could just sit or lie down and relax.) Older sister still wants to nurse FABULOUS article! WORKING?EANING? Older siblings have got to learn to share you with the new baby regardless of whether you breast or bottle-feed. It's always an adjustment, regardless of how you feed your baby. I found that my older children were very accepting of the matter of fact explanation that the new baby drinks special milk from mommy's breasts and when he is a big boy, like you, he'll be able to eat regular food. My older sibs were very close to their younger nursing sibs, and quickly learned to tell me when the baby wanted to nurse. They didn't like to hear them cry, and would curl up next to me while they were nursing and gently pat the baby. I used the time I spend nursing as an opportunity to cuddle and read books to my toddler (nursing gives you a free hand). I also got a big box and started filling it with little surprises while I was pregnant ( coloring books, bubbles, hot wheels, etc. from yard sales, dollar store, Goodwill, etc.). When I nursed the new baby, I would let the toddler pick one "present" out of the box. This helped make nursing a special time for the new big brother or sister. TIPS on weaning: If possible, allow several weeks of concentrated time and attention to the process of weaning. Any baby who has nursed for a year or more isobviously really into it and isnt likely to give it up easily. Dont offer, but dont refuse. Nurse him only when he is really adamant aboutit, but dont offer to nurse at other times. Make sure that you offer regular meals, snacks, and drinks to minimize hunger and thirst. Remember also that babies nurse for reasons besides hunger, including comfort, boredom, and to fall asleep. Try to change your daily routine to minimize situations where he wants to nurse.Does he want to nurse when he is bored? Try distracting him with a snackor a walk outside. Do you usually lie down with him at naptime? Try reading him a book or rocking him instead. If dad is around, encourage him to take an active role in weaning. Have dad try to put him back to sleep if he wakes during the night. If he nurses first thing in the morning, try letting dad get him up instead of you and feedhim breakfast. Watch his preferences and respect them. If he is having a really hard timegiving up the first thing in the morning nursing, you may want to continuethat one for a while rather than force the issue. With older toddlers (two years plus) you can begin by setting limits onnursing. For example, you can say Well nurse when we get home, but notat the mall. Substitute nursing on demand for nursing at yourconvenience. This theory also works for security objects (pacifiers orblankets). You cant take your blankie to pre-school, but it will be on your bed waiting for you when you get home. Shorten the duration of any given feeding. Say Thats enough, now, and gentlyremove the breast from his mouth. WORKING?
