These two pictures were sent in by a Rhodie netoholic who is too shy to be identified!

Those who frequent the #Rhodesia IRC channel might just spot her among the faces appearing on their home page . . .

She says both pictures were taken at the Elephant Walk Motel at Karoi on the 8th April 1978. This is where the convoy to Kariba gathered and set off.

The pick-up truck was at the head of the convoy and the machine gun (a Browning, she says, if memory serves) was mounted on a swivel mechanism, as was the bicycle saddle provided for the machine gunner. Talk about necessity being the mother of invention!

The first picture is of the police reservist whose job it was to man the machine gun (and bicycle saddle).

The second, the picture sender modelling the high-tech 1st line of defence. She says: "Note the 70s 'toilet brush' hairstyle! I remember being highly tickled by the machine gun set up, and being delighted when the police reservist allowed me to sit in his seat!"
